I really like this tool. It has a somewhat narrow range of applications. I wouldn't bother trying to use it to rip stock nor would I want to use it to do a lot of cross-cutting of 1" hardwood stock. Get a table saw and miter saw if you have those applications in mind. What it excels at it is cutting trim stock. I've used it quite a bit to remodel some bathrooms in my house. As someone else mentioned, it's a life-saver when it comes time to undercut door jamb trim for fitting tile (or any other kind of retro-install flooring, like Pergo). After trying several other options (Fein multi-master, handcut), I was so happy to discover this Bosch saw. It made an otherwise unpleasant chore much easier. I would say that it paid for itself in this one task. It's also good for fitting trim stock in tight/unusual spaces (notching moulding around other millwork or fixtures). Gives a much better cut than a recip/jig saw.I haven't had any problem with dull blades. I also have seen them for sale at the local orange big box home improvement store.

Flush-cutting and door jamb cutting gem

"Flush Cutting" means the blade literally slides on the surface and cuts protruding wood to that level - e.g., I've used it on many a stud poking out too far. Of course, you can cut above the "surface", as when shortening door-jambs because you are now installing ceramic tile. In such cases, this little gem of a tool is a God-send. I'm not aware of a competing electric tool, and although a manual saw could work in a pinch, this saw does a much better and faster job. The flush-cutting blades are quickly reversible, so you can cut right to left or left to right; depending on which is more convenient. Accessories include other types of blades, with rougher teeth or for ferrous metal (aluminum, brass, copper) cutting.

The 1640VS has no tool case.
The 1640VSK includes a [fair]case, a [lousy] miter "box" accessory, and several excellent clamps.

The saw is mainly for remodelers or serious do-it-yourself types, since it's a speciality saw you won't use every day. When you need it, however, you'll be mighty glad you own one. Highly recommended.

I purchased this saw to cut back baseboards to accommodate new door trim. This saw saved the day! It quickly cut through 3/4" baseboard stock. The saw produces a very fine, accurate cut with very little chatter. The blade can be moved to either side of the saw body to satisfy right or left hand cuts. It is relatively quiet as well. This saw is the only tool I found that can cut baseboards (or other trim) without having to remove them. It enabled me to cut 28 baseboards in about 3.5 hours; try that with a back saw. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Buy this saw! As I write this review, you can get this tool. It's a high quality specialty saw and a terrific value. It won't do everything but no other tool can do what it does. I have not had any problem finding blades locally and I live in a small city. One thing would make this tool better. Bosch needs to offer a flush-cut blade that has more set to the teeth. The available blade works great for crosscutting, but it's not suitable for even short rip operations.

Great saw.

Not long before I accidently noticed this saw in a catalogue, I mentioned to a friend that if an electric knife could be made to cut meat, why couldn't a similar electric saw be made to cut wood. That's effectively what this saw is. I used it the same day it arrived via UPS. I bought this saw (along with the Bosch compact belt samder) to cut the dovetail splines I make with a Kehoe dovetail jig. Also, I thought I could use it to actually hand-cut "real" dovetails and pins (I haven't tried this function yet, but I believe it will work OK with a hard-wood guide). It will actually cut flush to a surface. I held a 26-gauge sheet of steel between the wood surface I wanted to not damage and the flush saw blade. It worked very well. As time went on, I found I could control the saw without using the sheet of metal. The saw is a little on the heavy side for its size. It does things a saber saw cannot do, but it doesn't replace a saber saw. I wouldn't suggest a lot of heavy-duty and prolonged cutting with this saw, but for small cuts and dovetail-type joints, it's an excellent tool.

I love this tool it saved me from getting a crain cutter to do door jambs yes it is not as quick but i like the control of it and i have seen to many people hurt themselves with those dam sidewinder type flush cut saws. i perfer this type of saw plus i feel it leaves a cleaner cut with less patch work to the adjacent molding.
br /
br /as good as the saw it for jambs i like that this thing has other uses and doesn't just sit in the truck and only get used once in awhile. for $100 it seems to do twice as much work as a crain cutter.

You may not use this a lot, but when you need it...!

I admit, I waivered back and forth on whether to purchase this tool a few years ago. Now I wouldn't trade this little gem for anything! It is definately a 'specialty' power tool (aimed at the 'trades'), but it's one that makes your job sooooo much easier! This saw is primarily designed to flush cut clearance space for tile and hardwood flooring to slip under door jambs/casings for that nice 'finished' look. Undercutting jambs by hand was always such a pain! With this saw, just use scrap tile and wood (for the depth of the mortar bed) or a scrap piece of flooring as a depth spacer; set this baby on it; and push the rocker switch! The fine tooth blades cut a beautiful crisp, clean edge. The saw is very easy to guide and control dispite its size and weight. Bosch did a fantastic job of design when allowing for right or left hand cutting; just turn the blade edge around and virtually any needed cut can be made.
br /
br /This saw is an amazing timesaver and at around $100 is an outstanding tool for the money! I own several Bosch tools and the fit and finish; performance and quality of their tools are always superb... and they are available at a very decent market price; the 1640VS is no exception. I have also used this saw on other applications that required a flush cut, such as 'shaving' crowns off stud walls before drywalling. You'll probably find yourself scratching your head asking yourself how you got along without one.

This can be used in many ways from cutting door jambs to mitering corners. Great tool. Great idea. Much more control than sawsall. I used it the other day to chop off some stair balasters the first day I got and it worked perfect. be careful tho of kickbacks when cutting in tight locations.

I've been using this saw to undercut doorjams for tile for 2 years. In my opinion it does this task better than the cirular saw types because you can get it into corners. The blades that it uses provide a nice sturdy base to get a smooth cut unlike using a recip/saw. The blades last fairly long. I use one per new house, or about 150 jamb cuts per blade.
br /
br /I don't know what you could use the miter attachment for. I found it rather unstable with excessive vibration. This is also not a free hand tool, it needs to rest on a surface to do its job well.
br /
br /At the end of the day it save me hours of work. I recommend it to any flooring contractor that needs to undercut jambs.

I own a small home improvement/remodeling company and this tool saves me alot of time. I mainly use it when installing ceramic tile or laminate floors to undercut doors and trim. I have also used it to cut out subflooring (due to it's flush cutting ability) This saw has plenty of power, variable speed works great, blades are easy to change and seem to last quite a long time. The miter box that it attaches to works really well to cut base and shoe molding as well as other small trim pieces.
One small complaint, I really wish that bosch would make a metal cutting blade for it!!

Be careful before you buy this saw. It is a limited tool. It is great for trimming door casings and similar jobs. And, with the miter atttachment, will adequately cut small trim. However, it is heavy and prone to vibration, making free hand work difficult. If you are looking for a scaled down Sawzall or a cheap miter saw, this isn't it. Don't take this as a slam of the tool, it is fine for its range of application. Just make sure you know what you're buying it for.

If you do any flooring and you need to undercut door trim or jambs, you'll never go back without this tool after you've used one. Tool changes an arduous backbreaker to `get outta the way' move on now. Indispensible for certain tasks. One thing I do wish, is that there were a more aggressive tooth pattern for special tasks where a sawzall might be a bit much of a challange.

I am remodeling my floors in kitchen and bath. I needed something to cut one layer of subfloor under overhang of cabinets in very close quarters about 4". This was the only tool I could find that would go into such close quarters and cut a line flush with the cabinets. I had doubts that this saw would cut the 3/4 inch particle board laying flat on it, or would not burn up in the process! It did hold up and trimmed all the boards I had about 40 ft.
br / The reason I gave it a four is the cost of the blades.
br / Over all it save me from a lot or time consuming work that I would still be doing. It seems to still be in excellent condition and has very excellent power for its size.

This is a really handy tool. You can do pretty controlled freehand cut on baseboards and plywood. The quick change system is excellent and you can change the blades in no time. It is small enough to fit it my aluminum briefcase when the blade is removed. When you are working around the house it is really convenient to have it. I leave my jig saw and circular saw in the workshop. It feels like a hand saw with more power. By the way this tools cannot replace jig saw or circular saw. The flush blade is also very good. The tool is lightweight but feels solid and well built. Variable speed goes from zero to six.

The Bosch 1640VS is a great little tool that allows you to use a highly accurate power saw where you used to use a small flushcut or backsaw...which means small jobs go a lot faster. I use it to undercut door jambs and casings when installing solid wood flooring. The teeth on the blade are very small so the cut is very clean, without splintering. This also accounts for the fact that the cut takes a little longer than you might expect. But undercutting is clean and level. If you use the saw as I do, buy a few extra flushcut blades.

It's strange how a tool I never knew existed will drift into my awareness and within a few weeks I will have developed a need for it. I am not so much into fixing things because I like the work, it seems to be because I am fascinated by equipment and will learn a trade or skill just to use whatever new device holds my attention at the moment. And it comes in handy, especially in a case like the Bosch Finecut saw.. When I first saw one a few weeks ago my first thought was, "How cool. But silly. A power handsaw. Is that not a great oxymoron? And what would you use that for?"
br /
br /I liked the way the unit was reversible, the backbone of the saw action is integral to the blade and all the main unit does is provide power. The blade attaches and snaps over to either side in seconds. There are presently only 3 blades available, a coarse, a fine, and a true flush cut fine blade that will only run in one direction due to the offset. I would expect a carbide blade or an abrasive of some sort will be coming soon, as I have often needed a way to trim metal in a similar manner. But still I was unconvinced.
br /
br /About a week after that I got a project to remodel some cabinets in place and instantly discovered "what for". But I resisted at first, thinking I could pull it off with a Japanese backsaw and a recip, even though there would be some problems with scratching the cabinet interior. Before I could get started, I was called to replace a broken board in a redwood pool deck, a five foot section had snapped off of a 12-footer. It would have involved clearing away a railing and everything atop the good wood to remove the long piece and then trim it and replace. An hour, just for that.
br /
br /I picked up the saw immediately. ($99.00 at Lowes) along with 2 extra blades, as I have read they are somewhat delicate.
br /
br /It took longer to run extension cord to the job than to fix it. I marked the broken board to the length of the repair piece and put the Bosch to work. Two minutes, max, I had a perfect cut without a nick on the adjoining boards. One more job like this and the saw has paid for itself. It is hard to find that in a tool.
br /
br /There may be other units out there that perform as well, I have seen cheap jamb saw for twice the price, and I have heard a plate joiner can be pressed into service for things like the deck. But the Bosch was in the right place at the right time for me, and I am very satisfied with the purchase.

I think that this tool is extremely useful in certain situations when no other options exist, except using a handsaw. I used mine to cut some siding flush with the wall. It did a pretty good job, but the cutting appears slow or the blades wear out very quickly. The replacement blades are expensive. The blades are not made to cut metal, so if you run into a nail while cutting, the saw with jam up or the blade will wear down (which is lekely what happened to me). The tool tends to vibrate quite a bit, especially if the object that you are cutting is not well clamped down. I also used it to cut some jambs, and it did a very good job with those. Overall a unique tool that you'll be glad that you have around when you end up needing it.

Using this for trimming the bottoms of door jambs to allow for the installation of hardwood flooring.
br /
br /The actual cutting is very efficient and effective. Both types of blades work very well - clean cuts and the machine does not mind doing the cross-cut of the door frame. Likewise, cutting the molding is very clean.
br /
br /Actually getting used to the "free" handed cutting is another story, but that is not the fault of this machine. Helps to draw the desired height line first to have something to follow and then making sure the cut is level can also be tricky.
br /
br /The quick-change-reverse feature is extremely handy. Plus, the extraordinarily long power cord makes it easy to get to a power outlet without an extension cord.
br /
br /I really like the solid feel of the tool.

I've read most of the reviews on this saw and had to add my two cents. I've owned this saw for almost 5 years and used it quite a bit each year - until I got exasperated with it each time. Each time I've ended up regreting using it, primarily on the bottom of door jambs where it is supposed to excel. The problem I have with it, is that it is TOO powerful and despite the appearance of being "variable speed", it isn't. It can easily rip up a jamb if you don't get it just right and you must hold it VERY firmly or it will tear out your hands as well. It does a decent job on smaller trim work, working with it in the miter box. Here the miter box attachment helps control this beast. Still, it needs a true variable speed control. It could also use thinner blades, more in line with the Japanese pull saws. The thickness of its blades and its un-variable speed make for burning of the blade and/or the jamb, as well as sticking in the jamb cut while you are doing it. I've often resorted back to my Japanese pull saw after starting a cut with this. Anyway, that's my two cents. It sounds like other do like this, but after 5 years of experience with it, I just don't use it any more because of these problems and unreliability.

I guess I am the odd person here. But I found this tool to be the least favorite of my large collection of Bosch tools (as a remodeling carpenter). I suppose like the floor installers if I'd just got the tool for cutting jambs for flooring I might be pleased but even then I am not happy with the quality of the blades. Fire-tipped blades just aren't as good as either carbide or just a good hand saw (such as a Japanese pull saw). For jamb cutting I prefer my Fein multitool with wood/metal universal blade. Admittedly a very expensive tool and even the little blades are more expensive than the Bosch...but I can resharpen them and guide the cut much easier than with the Bosch.
br /
br /The clip-on feature for the replacable saw blades makes the saw wobbly and unable to cut a straight line unless across a very small molding. Even then, if it was a really hard wood, the fire/hardened blade grabbed and cut unevenly. A simple miter box and back saw would have been better..(but who even has one of those?) I have the kit with a nifty clamp on miter (box) for the tool and it's an easy set up. (that's maybe worth 3 stars) but I'd stick to two ....for the disappointment and expense.
br /
br /I finally found a job for the tool...cutting lots of screen molding, the long cord as mentioned is a goody, but I found I could use a small chop saw with a fine plywood blade... and even with a carbide blade too.....to be faster and cleaner.

This saw far exceeded my expectations. When installing tile in a room that's doors are already trimmed out, this is the only tool for the job. Prior to purchasing it, I did research and the Bosch had the best reviews for good reason. The motor is steady and very smooth. The quality Bosch tool owners have grown to expect. I'd say the only thing that I didn't like was how fast it burned through blades. other than that minor downside, I would purchase one again without hesitation.

I had a tough time finding this saw. None of the local "big box" stores carried it. The saw is, as described by others, a tool that will not be used continuously, or much at all, but I used it almost immediately to cut more than a kerf-sized slit behind an inside window frame (molding) over a bathtub. This permitted the installation of plastic waterproof panels underneath the molding (otherwise, the panels would have had to be trimmed with a jigsaw, which would work but not as well). To do that task by hand with some kind of flexible saw would have been extremely labor-intensive, and I am too old for that! The Bosch saw is well made, and worked well. Over a year ago I could have used this saw to trim door casings when installing a tile floor in my home.

There have been many times in my life I wished I had a tool like this, but I did not know it existed. All the hours spent with a small hand saw -- Wow! Now on my second house renovation, I was watching This Old House one morning and saw them using what was called an "undercut saw." Searches of the web did not turn up anything that looked like the tool they were using, all being circular saws. Somehow I ended up on the Bosch site -- and there it was! Got it and am totally pleased. Have not had it very long, but, like all Bosch products, seems sturdily built. I am a Senior Citizen but this saw is so light that I can handle it easily -- with one hand! Flush cuts are truly flush, blades seem to have a long life, and blade swaps are a snap. My initial use has been to cut wall lath in corners where the lath goes behind wall studs -- works great!

I bought this tool to undercut door jams for a hardwood floor installation - wow what a snap this tool is. Took no time at all, and the finish cut was very nice. I then used the tool to finish cutting the front nose off some old stair treads on a hardwood stair refinish. Again saved a whole bunch of time and really nice finish cut. I would highly recommend this tool - you will have no regrets buying it.

Its better than cutting off all the door trim and jambs by hand but only just. The switch is either on or off and the variable speed is a separate wheel. It is unsafe as well as difficult to operate. With the saw turned on, the operater is handling a dangerous tool that could easily cut him. If the switch was designed like a drill switch the operater would have more control and variable speed.
br /Blade change is easy.

I am a full-time carpenter and I have used this saw many times for flush-cutting jambs and controlled miters of cornerboards and other similar trim applications. It is an excellent tool: precise and solid when used properly. I am curious, however, why the case did not come with this saw. Had I known this I would have purchased a different kit.

Product works like it should. However at full speed with the aggressive blade, you better have a strong grip.

Very pleased with how straight a cut I get, and how fine a cut I get in thin plywood going across grain. A little awkward to handle, but with practice I believe this complaint will go away. Definitely more precise cuts than with a hand-held fine-tooth saw. It is important to keep the blade angle low to the cut, as their directions point out. I would strongly recommend this saw to anyone working with thin plywood.

Good tool for Crafters too.

My primary use for this tool is cutting exotic woods into pieces, to be used for craft projects. I obviously need a tool that will cut smoothly, with little or no splintering.
br /
br /I find that I can get nice, smooth cuts, with a minimum of effort and time. To say it goes through wood like a hot knife through butter is a bit of an exaggeration, but not much of one. The hand tool this replaces is a back saw, which would also make smooth cuts, but more slowly and with a greater degree of "elbow grease."
br /
br /Frankly, I am near 50, with a bad back and slightly arthritic hands, so it is essential to make the work easier. And, it is fair to say that if I can use this comfortably, anyone who is willing to read the directions can do so.
br /
br /A couple of caveats:
br /1)At 3.5 pounds, it is not heavy. But if you are used to making fine cuts with a hand saw, you will have to get used to the weight.
br /2)It doesn't vibrate much, which makes it easy to handle. But face facts; it's a power tool. There will be some vibration.
br /3)Unless you buy the kit with the miter attachment, they do not sell a case for it. But a 16-inch tool box will do just fine.
br /
br /A couple of things I really like:
br /1)The On/Off switch is a bit stiff. This is a GOOD thing, because it is hard to turn on or off, unintentionally.
br /2)The speed is variable. The speed dial is separate from the power switch. Some people may not like this, but I do, because it is also hard to change speed unless you actually want to.
br /3)Changing blades is simple and needs no tools.
br /4)Because it makes fine cuts, it does not blow dust all over. (Of course there will be some, but it doesn't blow in my face. I still suggest safety goggles, of course.)
br /
br /I haven't actually used it for home repairs or cut metal with it, though I will eventually get the metal-cutting blade. On the whole, a good product.

I only had four door frames to install trim to, but would have had to add another six hours to the job to peel off the old baseboard just to cut back to allow for the new trim. Not having to re-attach, caulk and paint the baseboard, which may have included repair in some cases, saved a lot of time. The tool took a bit of adjusting to for this application, but well worth the money! A must-have if you are not replacing baseboards.

This one really helps you if you are installing floors. I had to cut a pocket door ( I could not remove it) and it was the only way i could do it. Also cuts door jambs, moldings etc. neatly.

I am a Building Contractor in Northern Wisconsin. We used this tool to cut 3/4 inch Oak Flooring flush with the back of the toe kick under cabinets. It worked fine for this job. With any tool you need to use it for many different purposes to know if it will do the job specified by the manufacture and how it will hold up to job site use.

A must-have tool for flooring work.

Wow! The Bosch power handsaw cuts door jambs in minutes that take regular handsaw an hour. Every cut is very flush to the cutting surface and very smooth. I am impressed with the engineering of this saw. Switching or rotating blades is easy second to none.

br /My money was well spent on this tool though it won't be used as often. Recommend highly!

I had to cut out a countertop from around a vertical cabinet that rested on the base cabinets without disturbing or damaging any of the adjacent woodwork. The Sawzall woudl have been way too much tool for the job. Fortunately, my granite installer had this in his toolbag. Like another reviewer said, you won't use it every day, but when you need it, you'll be glad you have it.

I agree with all the other positive comments posted on this quality saw and have one to add: This saw does not fill the air with dust like the typical high speed rotary blade saws do, so you can work with it indoors without making a big mess. Perfect for installing wood and laminate floors. The more I use it, the more I cherish it. Wish that I had the mitre box for it.

I'm in the process of laying laminate flooring in a rental property. All goes well until I hit the doorways then everything comes to a halt as I struggle to hand cut the door jambs. By the time I'm done I'm nearly conked out. Well, I had to get this thing quick to save my sanity and it works as advertised.
br /
br /Some tips I feel I should give. 1. Keep firm control of this thing. At times it can "run" away from you. 2. Use the lowest speed that give an adequate cut in order to avoid number 1.
br /
br /Great tool that has made my day.

After the blood, sweat and tears spent on hand sawing two door jams (with 25 more to go), I went to Lowes and bought this saw. It cuts the jams like butter, I did not have those problems such as "vibration" or "too much power" as reported by some reviwers, I find it well worth the money especially when Lowes had the 15% off on power tools that weekend.

I often have to cut wood flush, and for years relied on a combination of circular saws, sabre saws, and hand saws. It was an ordeal. I bought this saw over a year ago, but it sat quietly in the box... until yesterday. Holy cow! What a difference it makes! Why did I wait so long? Five stars! Fast! Easy! Efficient! Great! No complaints at all!

The cuts you can make with this saw are as unique as the saw itself. This is one powerful saw and works where other saws just won't cut it (pun intended). I use mine mostly for various freehand cuts but be aware that this saw can produce a strong kickback. I used to have over 50 of these and they sold like hotcakes on ebay and not one unhappy customer. Wish I had more. Well worth the $100 plus investment.

I have had mine for over four years, and while it is not used as much as my table saw or miter saw, when I need to make a right-on-the-money cut, on a small moulding or a trim piece, this is the tool I rely on. I purchased a kit, with the saw motor, fence, and clamps.
br / As a trim carpenter/cabinetmaker, I have found that small moulding pieces can and will, shatter, when cut with a miter saw, even with a premium blade. When I need absolute accuracy on the small stuff, this saw delivers the cuts I need, when used with the fence, without the risk of shattering the work.
br / I used this saw, with excellent results, on a bathroom face-lift job, where the client wanted an existing vanity (and its drawer fronts) refaced. The drawer fronts required 3/4" X 3/4" corner moulding for framing them. After several were shattered on a miter saw, I used the Fine-Cut. I got clean, accurate miters every cut. I was pleased with the results (I am a demanding prefectionist), and more important, the client was impressed with the results.
br / Keep in mind, in my experience, that this tool can be a handfull when used freehand. As others have said, it is not just another reciprocating saw. With the fence, I have found it an absolute pleasure to use.
br / My only, and very minor, complaint is the supplied hold-down clamps supplied with my kit are occaisionally difficult to hook into the fence body. Some persistance always gets them hooked in place. In spite of this minor issue, the cuts this saw makes are 5-star, every time.
br / Buy one, and learn to use it for its intended purpose. I would recommend this tool to anyone who needs to make precise cuts on smaller, and expensive, mouldings. I think you will be as pleased with the results as I am.

Among all of the defined uses for this saw, it's amazing how you'll find yourself reaching for it at the spur of the moment... just when you're about to get angry and start ripping stuff apart, you remember you have it and make a nice cut on something. Plus its smaller size lets you get into places that a sawzall won't reach. Great product.

Like the other Bosch tools I have used, this one is excellent. It is very much "job specific"; but what it does, it does well, and so much easier than other similar tools. I have read reviews that said the miter box accessory is junk. I could not disagree more. If you take your time it produces accurate miter joints in trim and other small applications. This sure beats hauling my 10", Compound miter saw and stand, when I just need to make a few cuts.
