This saw is not a finish carpentry saw. At best a framing saw.

I run a small finish carpentry and cabinet installation company. We do the best of the best work for the best custom home builders and the best custom cabinetry and millwork shops. I purchased two of these. Out of the box I made small adjustments to set the first perfectly, it was very close to perfect adjustment from the factory. I was pleased so far. The detents were positive enough and not loose like the new Makitas. I loved having the bevel adjustment up front and looked forward to saving a lot of time because of it.
br /
br /Let me start by saying I am a Bosch fan. I use the best tools no matter who makes them. Therefore I use Bosch's tablesaw, jigsaw (although Festool's is equally good with better dust collection), palm router, and digital angle finder. I was looking forward to this saw, although I overlooked some negative reviews when deciding on purchasing it and was particularly influenced by the review from R. Clark who claims to own a custom home building co. and demand perfection (he must be an office guy). I wish I had listened to the negative reviews because this saw is completely unsatisfactory for finish carpentry and I have to sell it as a used saw (hopefully to a framer so I don't feel guilty). One other review which had me worried stated that the saw was fine the first month and steadily became worse each month. This is EXACTLY what I experienced, amazingly enough by the time I am disgusted enough with the saw to not want to use it anymore the 30 day satisfaction guaranteed warranty was expired.
br /
br /Some explanation of why this is not a saw which can be used for finish carpentry, LET ALONE SOMEONE WHO DEMANDS PERFECTION! After about 2 months (second job) the miter detents are sloppy and wiggly--exactly what I didn't want in a miter saw. The table got so tight it was almost impossible to use to fractions of degrees, and just a royal pain to use to 0 and 45. After cleaning out, lubing and loosening the miter table mechanism, it slides better, but the miter detents are still sloppy and wiggly--fractions of a degree (ie fine tuning your miter) are very time comsuming because the table moves when you try to lock it down, and wants to return towards 0 (though perfect 0 is equally hard to hit because the detent is wiggly and the lockdown moves the table!!!). It is very difficult to get the actual angle you want to cut. Not to mention even when you spend the considerable time to lock the table down where you want it, it is still hit or miss because the scale is the most clumsy of all saws--the marks are cast 1/16" wide--it seems this saw was only intended to be a framing saw. The bevel capabilities are also inadequate (although the adjustment up front is a time saver it is not worth it!--maybe for a framer...maybe). The up front lock doesn't stay tight and you have to tighten it each time you go to use the saw. When set to perfect 0 degree bevel, the scale reads slightly differently left and right 45 degree bevels (by about 1/4 degree). The laser is the aftermarket washer type which runs on batteries (another pain). Both sets of laser batteries which came with the saw died within 1 month. On the third job with the saw (a high quality blade was put on immediately) cuts are even worse, I'm not sure if it is blade deflection, bearing wobble, or something else (I don't care to troubleshoot it because the saw is not worth troubleshooting), but if you place a straight-edge against your cut piece you can see daylight where the cut is not straight. The millwork shop I'm doing a job for now has the same saw at the job I'm at with a service tag on it to be returned because theirs doesn't cut plumb--ie, where the blade starts is not in line with where it finishes once you have plunged the blade--so their cuts are never 0 (90) degree bevel. We are back to using the Dewalt 12" (new style, yet older than this Bosch) which one of my guys owns which is completely superior--the detents are rock solid, the scale is fine and you can actually guess what fraction of a degree you are set at, and when you lock it down it stays there. I didn't like this Dewalt at first because I was a little biased against the old style Dewalt from my days in a cabinet shop where blade deflection made it hard to cut a long miter. Also the capacity of the dewalt is partly achieved by a deep well to keep the slide short--which I don't like. But in all truth the Dewalt which I don't like is superior in every way. I am going back to the redesigned 10" Hitachi which I have used a lot in the past, and has the kind of accuracy I need.
br /
br /Stay away from this saw. Bosch has made a complete lemmon, it must be redesigned. The 10" has the micro-adjust, I don't know why they didn't put it on the 12"--is it because they made this saw to be a framing saw with no need for it, or because the table/detent system is too sloppy to work with a micro-adjust?

Im a contactor and we do all our trim work in house. After 10 great years of service, our Dewalt 708 finally kicked the bucket. After reading all the reviews I could find and talking with other trade workers, I limited my choices to the Dewalt 718, Makita 1214, and the Bosch 5412.
br / I thought the new Dewalt was a step back from our old 708. The head seemed to flex more , the rails are smaller diameter, I just didn't care for it. I liked the Makita, but just didn't care for the placement of the mitre scale over to the side.
br / That left the Bosch. After reading some reviews of arbor problems on this saw, I contacted Bosch to find out if this was a common problem. They admitted that they had had an arbor problem early on but had resolved it about a year ago. So I bought the Bosch.
br / First the cons:
br /
br / 1) First off the blade that comes with this saw is a joke. It had so much run out I thought the saw had the dreaded arbor problem. But after replacing it with the blade from the Dewalt it ran true and smooth.
br /
br / 2) I didn't care for the laser. In projects its line slightly to the side of the actual cut line. I felt more comfortable doing it the old fashioned way and just eyeing the blade to the cut line. Therefore the laser now resides in my glove box.
br /
br / 3) The mitre table was dead on out of the box. But the bevel was out 1.5 degrees. Setting the bevel on this saw is a little more difficult than it should be. It involves loosening 2 bolts, a set screw, and turning another bolt for the actual adjustment. I will say that once its set it should stay set for a long time.
br /
br / The pros:
br /
br / 1) What a sweet cutting saw, with the correct blade and the saw adjusted correctly this is one fine trim saw. Plenty of power and very accurate.
br /
br / 2) The front bevel control is great. Time will tell how it will hold up on the jobsite, but this is really a nice feature for repeditive bevel cuts. I dont think it will be long before other saw makers will start offering a similar feature.
br /
br / 3) The adjustable handle, extending table, and detent overide are all nice features that make using this saw even more efficient.
br /
br /
br / All in all I really like this saw so far. Its almost made me forget the sad demise of my trusted 708, almost. But I can highly recommend this saw, just count on replacing the blade.
br /
br /
br /Update: Well, I've returned the saw to Amazon. As the poster a couple of posts above mine has mentioned the cuts on wider boards (6" to 11") left small gaps in the middle of the cut. At first I thought I might have had some blade deflection, but after changing blades ( I only use full Kerf blades) a couple of times the cut remained gapped at the same place in the cut. The first 2 to 3 inches the cut was perfect after that it was simply off. If for example you cut across an 8" piece of 3/4 birch plywood
br /then butted the cut edges together you would end up with a gap 2 to 3 inches long in the middle of the cut. Not a large gap, but large enough to require some filler. Not what you need for stain grade cabinets. Also, at least on my saw the slides were very temperature sensitive. At 40 degrees the slides were very tight. At 60 degrees and above it was fine. My Dewalt never did this.
br / Its really a shame, I liked the features of this saw alot. And weather my problem was caused by an slight arbor problem or a minor slide problem it just isn't do for my kind of work. I am now in the process of ordering a Makita LS1214. It dosen't have all the features of the Bosch, but hopefully it will be more consistant in its cut. Therefore, I have to lower my rating to 3 stars.

I have many Bosch tools and loved them all. This saw in my opinion is not up to par with the other products I have purchased.

The 1st one I received had to be returned as the blade was not parallel to the sliders nor was it perpendicular to the table. I am not speaking about miter adjustments here. Vertical travel of the head assembly was perfect, the blade arbor was out of square. The slide travel was also very nice and smooth. Unfortunately the blade was not parallel to the slide motion and the left side of the blade would bind in the cut and tear up the top edge and forward facing edge of the work piece being cut.

The replacement saw is better but the blade is still not perpendicular to the vertical motion. It is off as much as it could be and still be within the kerf of the cut. It binds ever so slightly.

I have not decided to return it as of yet. I may.... I'll work with it through the current project and make up my mind at that point.

At this point, I wish I had gone with the DeWalt or Hitachi :(

The accuracy on this saw was perfect right out of the box. All angles were dead accurate from the factory. It arrived in only 3 days. I use it to make various joints including dovetails, miters, and other compound joints in my work. I was first introduced to this saw when one of my workers purchased it. I tried it out and I was placing my order that same day. After I received mine and worked with it a few days, I moved it to the front page of my website. Only the best tools can earn that spot!

I have used a lot of saws over the last 15 years and I have to say this is the best miter I have ever used. I give this one a 5-star rating, and all my employees agree. It is all you could want or ask for in a miter saw and then some!

As others have mentioned the dust collection isn't the greatest but this is a very minor point on such a well built and accurate saw.

Pros
-Adjustable Handle
-Built-in extension slides
-Micro adjustment knobs
-On board tool storage
-Up front release for bevel/compound cuts
-Max bevel override
-Quick and fine adjustment for depth of cut

Cons
-dust collection is marginal

My experience differs from some of the other reviewers. First, adjustment was not great right out of the box: both bevel and miter were almost 0.5 degree off. I found adjustment slightly tedious, but who cares, the adjustment mechanism provides for great precision and strength. Took me about twenty minutes to get it perfect. Second, I can't produce the gap in the middle of a cut that other reviewers found to be a problem. Eight to twelve inch cuts in mahogany ply, 3/4 and 4/4 cherry, white oak, and mahogany have been dead on (placing the cut edge on my table saw table shows no detectable gap, and miters show no gap). Third, I've made a couple of hundred cuts or so in the above woods using the blade that came with the saw, and they are smooth as glass, allowing clean miters with no gap. Many of my miters involve odd angles and often I need to swing the miter both left and right (for hatch covers on a yacht), and I find the miter lock override very easy to use, and the scale to be accurate. When I use the 45 degree left and right stops, the 90 degree joints are perfect.
br /
br /So far, I have used the saw only in my shop, where it glides beautifully; have not had an opportunity to test the cold weather problem mentioned by another reviewer.
br /
br /I like the laser as much as I like any laser; handy for some cuts in oddly angled pieces (e.g. hatch covers), but, whenever practical, lining the blade up with a marked line is still the most reliable way, in my judgment.
br /
br /Everyone is right about dust collection. The bag misses most of the dust, and with the port connected to my shop system probably ten percent of the dust escapes.
br /
br /I really like the upfront controls and the adjustable handle. The quiet power and the fast acting blade brake are nothing but pleasure. All in all it's one of my favorite tools, and I love using it.

I, like many other reviewers, make my living using miter saws, so I have tried almost every one available. I chose the Bosch because my experience with their products in the past has been flawless. The thing that first attracted me to this miter saw was the 60 degree miter capacity, which is worth the price of the saw by itself when siding on the gable.
br /
br /When I received the saw, it had some issues. I would suggest every owner check their fence to be sure it is true(I had the same problem with my Makita). The "uni-fence" design is a great idea, but the manufacturers seem to have a difficult time making them straight. This can be fixed with a little trial and error by clamping across the table and pulling the fence back and forth until it is right. (Don't forget to loosen at least one of the fence bolts, the outside ones are almost impossible to loosen) It doesn't take much force, and the magnesium (I think) has almost no rebound. Once this is fixed, there is a glimmer of hope, but the problem is hard to catch at first. Even a 1/32" gap behind the straght edge will cause the blade to burn when cutting wide pieces. My saw table also had an alarming amount of wobble in the table, but tightening the pivot bolt on the underside of the saw helped to correct this some. (Again, there is a fine line, tightness here also makes the table difficult to turn.) The bevel/miter controls are where this saw really stands above any other. They are intuitive and positive. The dual compound feature was a quantum leap in miter saw technology, but most other saws make it cumbersome. This saw makes it really easy. The knob to the left of the lock lever allows positive control and locks the blade square(plumb) if you want it to. Here again, my saw may not work correctly, because it looks like there are 3 positions, but mine only engages 2. Still, it is easy to release, and return to square.
br /
br / My advice to any potential buyer is to ponder whether you really need the 12" size. When cutting large crown molding, it really shines, but the larger diameter blade deflects significantly more than the 10". This makes the 10" more accurate for most cutting. The 12" blades also cost almost twice as much, and cannot be used for crosscutting on the tablesaw. The cutting capacity of the 12" is about 5" x 12", and the 10" is 4" x 12". Either will cut a standard 4x4, and neither will cut a 6x6.
br /
br / I gave it three stars because it is disappointingly inaccurate. I thought I had finally found the perfect trim saw, but it really is an average performer in a really sweet package.

I quit buying throw away tools years ago. You get what you pay for people and I'll NEVER skimp on tools again!! ONLY THE BEST TOOL WILL DO FOR ME! I am a classic do-it-yourselfer on just about everything. I have remodeled most all of our own homes (We averaged moving about every year and a half) completely myself. Framing, trimming, cabinets, you name it. After many days of research in stores and the web, I bought my last Bosch 10" slider and loved it. After several years of regular use, I decided I wanted to upgrade to a 12" slide miter saw and gave my 10" to one of my son's. I liked the Ridgid and Bosch reviews and decided to try the Ridgid 12" slider. Good saw and I have other Ridgid tools as well. BUT it just wasn't quite the saw as my Bosch. I took the Ridgid back and resumed my research for the latest and greatest just to be sure. After giving ALL saws due consideration, I bought the new Bosch 5412L slider. WILL NOT CONSIDER ANY OTHERS AGAIN! This saw is all I will ever need! I also bought the Bosch T3B Miter Saw Stand this time. I'm in tool heaven! Stan/Fairhope,AL

I bought this saw because of 3 reasons. One, I wanted a slider with large capacity. Two, I wanted the ability to cut any angle on dimensional lumber. Three, I wanted the portability of transporting to a job site. I already own a 12" porter cable miter-saw, and a 10" Protech version, both being compound miter saws. I am not a contractor, but I do a lot of woodworking, and occasionally remodel a kitchen or bath, build cabnets or install moldings, and even build a deck now then.
br / The saw has been accurate and pleasantly smooth in its operation. Now the one problem. When I was cutting dados in 4x4 posts the saw had a tendency to slip lower and making the kerf deeper. Unless you take the time consuming task of locking in the depth guage tightly with a couple of wrenches. The saw will perform very well, but I think it should be easier to adjust the depth stop. I stopped the project and set up a dado blade in my radial arm saw and finished the posts, with much better results. All in all, this saw is the cadillac of sliding compound miter saws in my opinion, and I have looked at most everything else on the market before deciding to purchase this one.

I own a small residential remodeling business and used a Hitachi 8 1/2" slider for the past 9 years. I was very satisfied with it except that the only way to cut all but the smallest crown molding is on the flat. When my neighbor offered to buy my trusty saw, I sold it. After much research, I decided on the feature laden Bosch 12" slider.
br /
br /The first thing I noticed about this saw is the huge footprint. It is 26" from the back of the slider to the fence and 45" to the miter lock knob. By way of comparison, the new Hitachi 12" slider and the Dewalt DW718 are only 17-19" to the fence and about 36" deep. The second thing is how user friendly the saw is. Nearly all of the control knobs are up front and easy to use. I particularly liked the miter detent override but found the right bevel range selector knob a litte awkward to use.
br /
br /The manual is generally well written with one exception. It describes how to check a tri-square for squareness but doesn't tell how to check an actual cut. The easiest way to check the 0 degree bevel is to cut a straight piece of 1 x 4 while holding it perpendicular to the table and against the fence. Then fold the two halves together like a book and hold the stock perpendicular on a known true surface such as a table saw. The two cut edges will mate perfectly if the bevel angle is 0 degree. The location of the "lip" if there is one will indicate which way the bevel is out. Use the same method to check the blade square to the fence only use a 12" wide piece of plywood. Both the 0 degree bevel and blade square to fence on the saw I bought were out by over 1/2 degree but were easily adjusted using the above method.
br /
br /I agree with other reviewers that the dust collection system is poor even when hooked up to a shop vac. The large footprint of the saw would also make a dust hood impractical. I also agree with others that the stock blade is inadequate for fine finish work but see no problem with using it for general purposes. The miter detents were accurate. I was unable to duplicate the "gap" that two reviewers mention.
br /
br /I had never used a laser and having used this one can continue to do without. The laser line moves more than 1/32" from right to left as the saw is lowered. This is explained in the manual as follows; "Due to the position of the laser washer with respect to the blade, the laser line shifts slightly from right to left as the blade is lowered towards the workpiece. The laser line will line-up with the left side of the blade when the blade teeth are approx 5" from the top surface of the workpiece. Please familiarize yourself with the precision range of the laser line and adjust your workpiece as necessary" This is followed by; "!WARNING Do not adjust the workpiece while lowering the spinning saw blade. You may loose control and your hand may contact the saw blade." The problem is that the laser only comes on when the blade is spinning which in my view makes it OK for framing but useless for fine finish work.
br /
br /All things considered, I really like this saw but am returning it because it is just too big and will cost too much to buy quality 12" blades. I'm going to re-consider a 10" slider so I can use the blades I already have. I also plan to purchase the recently redesigned Ridgid miter saw stand that comes with wheels and allows you to store the saw vertically. It also has skids on it that make it easy to slide into the back of a truck.
br /
br /Additional note: I ended up buying the 10" Bosch 4410L slider on sale from Amazon and gave it a 5 star rating. It has a tool storage compartment, micro-detent adjustment and larger dust collection port. It has the same laser but the line doesn't move because the resting position of the blade is about 5" from the workpiece. I still had to adjust the bevel stops and square the fence. I've used the saw for over a year now and in hindsight would have bought a 12" slider because of the additional depth of cut when holding stock verticle to the fence. I wasn't able to make some cuts on some larger crown and base moldings with the 10" blade because the motor got in the way. I'm still happy with the way the saw performs, I like the laser, but don't use the micro-adjust feature because the tap-tap method is faster and just as accurate. I also bought the Ridgid miter saw stand on sale for $99 at Home Depot and like everything about it except that the outfeed rollers can't be tilted to make them parallel to the saw bed. It works great for moving the saw around the job site - even on uneven terrain - and it is easy to load in my truck. I can also store the saw vertical while it is mounted to the stand. I mounted my saw on a piece of plywood and hooked up a switched duplex outlet on the underside of the plywood to plug my saw and shop vac into. This way I don't forget to turn the vaccum on before I use the saw. I also mounted a pencil sharpener behind the saw.

One flaw... otherwise AWESOME!

Over the years of woodworking/construction/renovations, I've gradually become a DeWalt man (aside from my Delta shop tools). I used a DeWalt DW703 12" chop saw for years - what a workhorse! I recently decided to upgrade to a sliding miter. I wrestled around for weeks with purchasing the DeWalt DW718, but read horrible reviews (head deflection, cheap parts, etc). I read decent reviews for this Bosch 5412L saw and decided to give it a shot. A colleague has the Bosch 4412 and loves it! The Bosch 5412L saw is amazing... very smooth and accurate. I wish it had a longer cross-cut capability (the DeWalt will cut up to 16", which is nice - but what's the point if it isn't accurate?), but I can live with a 12" cross-cutting capability. The main flaw that I have seen with this saw is the dust collection. Even with a shop-vac attached, you're work space will be a disaster. However, this seems to be a theme among most sliding miters. It's funny, after several cuts, I don't think one speck of saw dust is in the dust bag. Anyway, I love it regardless; great features, great price, and accurate.

I have used many brand tools in my trade and have found this Bosch miter saw to be the best of all the rest. From its front access bevel and miter controls to its easily mounted arbor mounted laser ,this saw was designed by someone who knows the trade industry .It is accurate and user friendly and gets the job done fast. The dust bag collection system on this saw is no better or worse than others ,(none I have used or seen work well.)I am a contractor and most of my equipment is Bosch ,any tool that is not already will soon be Bosch.

This is by far one of the nicest miters we have bought-having mostly used Dewalt products. The one thing which we noticed right away (which wasn't even a consideration when we bought it) was how much quieter it is than our Dewalt 12" saw. This isn't really a big deal when outdoors but when you are trying to sneak some last minutes cuts in at 10 PM with neighbors in an attached house it is a big deal!
br /The ONLY fault we have found so far is that both sets of batteries for the laser have in about 3 weeks with only minor usage daily. Not sure if we received a bad batch but they died a little too quick.
br /If you want a great saw-buy this!

I fell for the wonderful thought of an upfront bevel adjustment. Don't get me wrong once you figure out how to use it it is pretty slick. However like i said the saw as a whole is way overrated. First of all the dust collection system is nothing more than a big opening behind the blade that bosch assumes the dust will want to go in. Second the stamped miter markings are well over 1/32 thick so you have no idea where on that mark youre supposed to put the little, flimsy, sheetmetal, arrow at. Then if you want to adjust it so you can set it on one of the edges of those monstrocitiesit has a cheap phillips head screw through a hole at the top of the marker which means A it is easy to strip, and B it can only rotate. Hence you can set the arrow on the edge at either the top or the bottm of the hash marks. Thirdly the bevel markings are so tiny that you defeat the point of having the upfront bevel adjusment because you are bending over the saw to see where that red marker is. And to make matters worse, the red markers are well over 1/16" away from the markers. And of course the laser tracking. It is a dim arbor mounted laser that can only be mounted on one side (left side) and it only turns on when the blade is spinning (that's safe!). Then to make it worse it is 1/32" off and cant be adjusted. Useless except if you are framing with this saw. I bought this saw 2 weeks ago and not i need to replace my brushes already! They shouldnt even be hardly broken in yet. I am very thankful for Amazon's 30 return policy. Go with the Hitachi or Makita if you want a finish carpenters saw use this one if you want a fancy framers saw.

The woodshop I worked at had purchased on of these saws early in 2006. When i went on my own later the same year, I liked the saw so much I bought one of my own. This is the ultimate miter saw. The smooth operation and 60 degree miter capability is bar none. I also like the upfront miter controls and the horizontal slide bars are a must for anyone who relies on perfect miter cuts every time.
I recently used this saw to install about 5000 lineal feet of 8" hickory baseboard and the saw performed flawlessly cutting the miters. Also, the laser, while I was a bit hesitant to use at first, becomes one of my favorite features. The only drawback to the saw is the blade that comes with it. I recommend buying a Freud 12" Ultimate Cutoff Blade. The blade is a little pricey, but the cuts are phenomenal and for hardwoods it is a joy to use and will save the life of your saw.

I can do nothing but commend Bosch for this miter saw. It's the best on the market in my opinion. I recently used it to cut 4 x 10 and 4 x 12 cedar beams for an entryway. It performed like a champ. Don't waste your money on less. This is the real deal.

I first used this saw to build a deck. Because I needed to set it up and use it quickly I had no time to study the instructions. I pulled it out of the box and started using it. Within minutes I was doing all the basic functions and found it easy to use and accurate. I was going back and forth between the Bosch and the Dewalt slide saw and I am happy with my choice. I later put this saw on a Delta miter saw stand with large wheels, which made it portable and much easier to transport. I've used it for small and large jobs and it has performed perfect especially cutting crown molding. The dust collection process needs some serious looking into. It works a little when using the slide function, otherwise it's useless! I called Bosch about this and was told " yes we've been having some problems with this" and that was it. They made no attempt to resolve this, which it unusual for Bosch in my experience. I am going to try a dust scoop, which is the main difference, I can see between this and another saw I have that works well. Overall I am more then pleased with this saw and recommend it for the serious carpenter for large and small jobs.

Totaly awsome saw! Very easy to cut oddball angles on tall base trim. No saft start, but it doesn't pose a problem at all! Very consistant accuracy. The laser, however, leaves something to be desired; I left mine off as its more of a headachethan its worth. It only works well when the saw head is in full up position.I am a custom cabinet maker/trimmer and this saw is the exact necessary upgrade from my Makita .

I am blown away by this saw. I am an avid do-it yourselfer and do some remodeling work on the side. After a few months using it, I realize this saw is more than I will ever need. Precise cuts, incredible construction...seriously built like a tank. Turned to Bosch from a friend's recommendation, and I am sure glad I listened. You will not be sorry with this saw. If I had to find a flaw - it ain't light.

This is the best double bevel, sliding compound miter saw made today.

There are reviewers who say things like blade wobble, laser beam, and dust collection are problems,
but overall, this is the best one out there. The laser works fine,
although when you drop the hammer, the beam shifts a little tiny bit,
due to the beam being mounted next to the blade at the arbor, so lowering the blade down
to a cut causes the angle to change, but when the blade makes contact, it is right on

Dust collection is pretty much non-existant, maybe use the collector bag for storage of your saw wrenches
and spare batteries they provided. I haven't hooked up a shopvac either, which would handle that if you really, really needed it for your shop.

The bevel adjust is a little tight like those previous said, which is nice so the saw isnt falling
from side to side when you are trying to adjust the angle.

Miter adjust is a little big fingered, in that you cant get a half-a-degree change in an instant. The automatic locks are set at standard degree increments, and you might have to fine tune, but there are no other saws that are "perfect" miter saws either.

The Blade they give you will cut anything - it's a 60T, Ive used for a few months to cut wood, copper, plastic, steel, everything. Get an extra 96T if you want something for fine cuts right away. The saw also comes with a side clamp, which holdsthe lumber on one side while you make the cut and hold the other side, it comes in handy if you dont have a
table or stand. The hammer grip rotates which is nice, so you can rotate the grip to an angle that you like, righty or lefty.

The large box is thrashed when it arrives, but everything was inside and perfect when I opened it up. I waited for the $100 discount, plus the mail-in Bosch Jigsaw 1590EVSK deal (which is the best jigsaw ever),
so if you can find that still, go for it.

A very good saw. I've read the comments of my fellow reviewers, and I appreciate the diversity of opinion. The negatives the have been discussed are basically blade wobble, too much dust, the saw does not cut straight, and the laser does not work.

I found what appeared to be blade wobble, and yet it cut absolutely straight. Therefore, I clamped a straight edge 1mm from the blade, and ran the saw. There was no wobble, at any place on the blade, even near the edge. It appears the "wobble" is an optical illusion created by the blade guard, which is made out of plastic. Also, I am suspicious that some reviewers have not bolted the saw to a stand or bench, but just set it on top of a bench. This is not acceptable, as this is a heavy saw, and will not be stable without being bolted tightly to a level surface.

As for the dust, a simple 2.5" to 1.25" converter, with a standard shop vac attached removed about 90% of the saw dust. Now, this is not a table saw with a cabinet, nor does it have the overly large hood that some have suggested Bosch should have used, so it is not reasonable to think 100% dust removal is possible, and it is not going to attach to a giant dust collection system hose. This is a portable saw, and that is part of what I like about it. Used with a Rigid MUV stand, I can fold it up and stand it upright against the wall of my shop, neatly out of the way and saving space.

As for straight cuts, mine are almost perfect, except for a small amount of wood tear out that the kerf does not seem to stop. A tighter kerf, however, would not allow sufficient clearance for deeper angled cuts. Also, I checked all factory settings, and the saw was perfect out of the box and required no tuning.

As for the laser, my first one was defective. Bosched sent me a new one in less than a week. They told me they have had a few defectives. Now, as far as the laser not being straight, that is not true. It is straight, and if you follow the directions to place the laser line just to the left of your pencil line, you will have a perfect cut.

Right out of the box the saw was dead on all the settings, but the cut just isn't great. My test piece was a 1x4 maple filler. Good hard stait wood, but the cut wasn't completely flat, after switching blades for a heavier stiffer blade, it got noticable better but not great, putting the cut piece on my table saw shoes little gaps along the cut, especially in the begginging of the cut. Tried 20 different was of entering the cut and altering speed and hand pressure on the saw, but nothing really changed, bad cut after bad cut...For comparison, my hitachi 10" slider is dead on accurate and you couldn't ask for a better cut. I have a similar problem with another Bosch 12" dual bevel (no slide) which had severe arbor wobble when i first purchased it, warranty service took care of it but the cuts were never perfect. Guess its just a bad design, but even with this flaw this is one big awesome saw for 99% of all trim carpentry. Wouldn't hesitate one second to trim a house out with it, just not cabinet and high end stain grade work. Even for large crown it's accurate, i'm just talking about 1/64" gaps in the cut, still tight enough to skip caulking if your good enough. Unfortunetly I wanted a large capacity saw to keep in my shop for furniture and cabinet work, and that demands only the best cut and although this saw doesn't offer it, it's still has plenty to offer especially for the price.

This saw has a lot of great features. It is well thought out and well designed, but it has basic accuracy problems that make the saw poorly suited to highly accurate trim and finish carpentry. My criticisms echo many of the same made against Bosch 4410, 4412 and 5412 miter saws. Two deficiencies were apparent right out of the box. On my saw, the fence is not straight. It appears to bow concave relative to a straight-edge by about 1/4th of a millimeter. Also the 45 degree detent on the left side is accurate, but the one on the right side is off by about 1/2 of a degree. For a higher-end miter saw, the casting and machining should be more accurate than this. Other miter saws that I own (Makita) do not have these inaccuracies.

Was a sceptic . But no more.

I did alot of reserch before making this purchase . I read alot reviews on this saw and it was about a fifty / fifty split of good and bad . But right from the box i started checking it out and i have not had to make any type of adjustment to any of the angle cuts 90 degree is right on .I do think thay could have had a double lazer light . The main reason for choosing the Bosh over The DeWalt was the soft start moter. The one thing i must agree with all the other reveiws is ( IT IS A SAW DUST MAKER ALL OVER THE PLACE ) Even with my dust collector system it is very messy. But i have no regerats with my purchase.

Excellent saw. I use this for both framing and finish work. It's accurate and dependable. The handle is unique in that it can be rotated to various positions. The little table extensions come in handier than I ever expected them to. I love the attention to larger than 45 degree cuts for both cut types.
br /
br /The 12 incher takes a while to get to full speed. For faster cutting in framing setups, I use a 10 inch chop for a lot of work because it ramps to full speed way faster, less downtime. The main purpose for my bosch 12 inch is when I want beautiful, consistent cuts such as in moldings. It also comes in handy for angled cross cuts that normally required a hand circular saw to perform.
br /
br /The laser is the stupidest damned thing I've ever seen. It only turns on when the blade is rotating due to its design. Hitachi uses a laser with a switch. It stays on until I turn it off. I used the Hitachi laser to line up cut angles and find angles of particular pieces perfectly and without a hitch. Trying to do that by running the blade up and down the piece not only nicks it (which really matters for finished pieces) but almost never really works perfectly. Having lost that ability with my Bosch saw is one of the saddest things that has happened to me. Some people might argue that i can do the same thing with the Bosch saw on. You can go ahead and hold your work secure while adjusting the angle of the cut and the placement of the piece with one hand and holding the saw on with the other hand (which is dangerous because your hand will be under a running a blade, don't actually do it). I think Bosch added it as an afterthought in order to be able to use it as an advertising gimmick. It's a waste of time, don't bother installing it.
br /
br /Other than the laser, which perhaps I was spoiled over, I am very happy with this purchase and have had a lot of guys comment on the quality of the cut that occurs without fail from this saw. In the end, the quality of the cut and the ability to make a variety of cuts is all that matters.

Excellent product... I decided to invest a large amount of money into a miter saw and was torn between the Dewalt718 and this Bosch 5412L. I did not try the Dewalt so I cannot actually compare the two but I believe those that work with the tools know the most about performance and the reviewers know their business best. I love the smooth startup and the easy ajustments in front of this machine. This saw arrived in perfect condition, I checked all angles; table/fence/miter/and bevel and they were all true. I installed the laser system in 5 minutes and off I went. I have cut my first crown molding and now wish I ordered the angle finder too! Great miter saw, you will not be disappointed.

This is my first miter saw and I am very pleased. For 30 years I have used a 60's vintage Craftsman 10" radial arm saw. I got tired of having to set it up every time I wanted to get an accurate cut. I've been recovering an above ground deck with composite and have needed to make 15 +- degree cuts on a lot of boards. I decided to bite the bullet and spend the money on a good saw. The reviews on Amazon said this is the best and Bosch's free jigsaw promotion combined with Amazon's price closed the sale. Amazon delivered before promised. I also bought a 12" True Angle Finder and it was wonderful to measure the angle, cut the piece and have it fit every time.

Great saw. It took about one hour to align everything and now it cuts great. The blade that comes with it is ok but plan on buying a better one soon. The dust bag is a joke, but hook it up to a shop vac and it does a good job.
Highly recommended.
The saw is more than I need. A 10" miter saw would have been enough, but, at $470.00 shipped with a DeWalt Reciprocating Saw and a Bosch Jig Saw it was too good of a deal to pass up.

After shopping for a sliding mitre, I decided to purchase a 12" over a 10". The cross cut length was the major factor in that I had to be able to cut wider boards with precision.
br /
br /The saw was packed well and took just a few minutes to extract from the box. I then spent about 30 minutes or so checking/setting the bevel and fence. No matter what saw you purchase, expecting the saw to be perfect out of the box is too much to ask!
br /
br /The readouts for setting miter cuts were adjusted to reflect my preferences. Since angle marks are a bit fatter than most saws, I set each needle to the left edge of each mark to assure the angle I was cutting was easily set. After test cutting some oak, each cut was rechecked and passed inspection. THers was no wobble, the arbor assembly was dead on and cutting 1x10's produced joints that were just spot on.
br /
br /The bevel lock is just awesome. There is no need to reach back, over the saw to unloosen a lever etc... The drwback is the stiffness in setting both the miter and the bevel. I have never been a big fan of presets on any saw, since I trust my eye more than some casted tool indent, but making finer adjustments with such stiffness is something that should be addressed. The dust bag has less dust in it than my shop floor! The young engineer in charge of that part of the saw design was probably fired!
br /
br /The saw is built solid, operates exactly like it should and I am very pleased. It is designed even for the beginner but has made cuts that many will never have to make! I am not a big fan of buying a tool and trusting that the tool will do all of the work. I finished an oak landing on a staircase today that was all custom with some pretty wild cuts. The results were outstanding. I bought this to construct a series of builtin's and am anxious to finish the drawings and get started.
br /
br /This is an excellent saw and the price is well in line with what I expected. After looking at all of the saws at Lowes and Home Depot, this is light years ahead of anything out there! I hope this helps!
br /
br /UPDATE: After completing an entertainment center made from walnut, I ran this saw through the battle. The bottom line was, the saw was flawless! The latest project is just dead on.
br /
br /This saw is just top notch!

This miter saw has all the best features that you'll want to look for in a sliding compound miter saw. High quality of components and thought went into the design. It is very easy to use, can do everything you need it to, and has been great for me. The laser is easy to see and use, the saw starts and stops smoothly, the controls are all at the front of the saw and are very easy to use.
br /
br /***Side Note***
br /I bought a Ridgid Miter Saw Utility Vehicle to attach the Bosch Miter saw to. It works great and allows for easier handling of longer pieces. You have to drill two extra holes through the miter saw utility vehicle as it is made to fit the Ridgid line of miter saws specifically. Anyone buying this miter should be able to handle that easily enough. It makes it much easier to move the saw around and also allows you to store the saw vertically. Here's the [...]

While this saw does have plenty of nice features, it doesn't achieve its primary objective of accurately cutting trim. The saw has lots of fancy features, yes. But, the bottom line is it can not cut anywhere close to straight. It amounts to a $600 waste of hard earned money.
br /
br /This would be a great framing saw, but has NO place in finish carpentry.
br /
br /My first saw went to the Bosch factory service center several times to no avail. They simply weren't staffed/trained/equipped to deal with inaccuracy problems with a miter saw. Eventually, after a lot of legwork on my part, Bosch corporate replaced the saw with a new one. To my disappointment, the new saw has the exact same problems. It simply can't cut straight, period. A high end Freud (like a LU85R012) or Forrest Chopmaster won't solve the problem. None of the adjustments described in the manual will help nor will adding an accessory fence. Removing the extension wing(s) if they are out of flush with the main saw table also won't help.
br /
br /For finish work, this saw is worthless. After owning other Bosch tools, it's really hard to believe they continue to sell such a terrible saw with their name on it. Save yourself time, money, and worlds of frustration and look elsewhere.

I've had this saw for six months now and continue to be impressed by its accuracy, features and quality of its construction. I bought during an Amazon 10% off tool sale. Combined with the rebate form that allowed me to get a free Bosch jig saw (also very nice, by the way), this was one of the best values I've experienced during extensive shopping at Tool Crib and Amazon over the last several years. I just recieved my saw via UPS today, just in time to start a hardwood flooring project on my own house. Set up was a breeze and it mounted right to my old Trac Master stand. I was a bit nervous about wether the saw would be adjusted dead on after reading a few reviews that ripped on Bosch for this. Not so, with mine. I grabbed some scrap wood and tested miters and bevels from many different angles. 100% dead on from the factory even after enduring the UPS shipping. (the box came complete with many dents and rips) The only thing I could possibly suggest as an improvement would be to set the laser slaved to the saw power so it came on when you pressed a button on the handle but before the blade starts to spin. The Dewalt is like this. That being said, guess what? After about ten cuts, I was very comfortable with the process, and the tweaking would just make an excellent saw a little bit better. I have always loved my Bosch tools and this one just refreshed the love, Baby! And thanks to Amazon for their discount on power tools, I got the saw for $469!!

As a handy person that does everything from auto restoration to house building,i own a lot of tools. When I buy them I really do my homework to find the right one for my needs. This saw does everything it is supposed to.The slide action is very smooth and the up front controls make it very user friendly.I also like the tall fence for crown and wide moulding. My only complaint would be that it was far from true, out of the box.It took a bit of adjusting to get the miter bevel angles right, but once this was done it works great.

This is one of the greatest miter saws I have ever owned. I own a business that builds custom furniture and we have both Porter Cable, and DeWalt miter saws in the shop. This Bosch is hands down the best unit we have owned. It is extremely accurate, smooth and powerful. Just today we had to trim the base of an 8 inch turned Hickory post. Using the laser blade tracking we were able to cut a perfect 90 degree base by flipping the post just once. So far I have been very impressed with the saw.

First off about me...I renovate victorians for a living. We do framing to finish. I wanted a saw that would hold up wel to job site work but still be able to handle finish crown. I have a Dewalt 12 inch dual and wanted a table with slide capability. I am not brand loyal but rather look for a saw with the features I need and like.
br /
br /I love this saw...and will save you from reviewing all its features but do wish to highlight the great...and the annoying.
br /
br /Highlights:
br /Handle swivel (I don't love or need it but my help likes it.)
br /
br /fence- love it...height, the hold down that come with it (dewalt makes you buy them)
br /
br /front table handle- love the size, location, and easy adjustments
br /
br /slide- smooth, straight, sturdy
br /
br /OK so the BAD:
br /
br /the laser- is annoying as it is onesided...I prefer line lasers that cover the material removed (but this is personal) the laser is acurate and the batteries last 3 months or so with daily use
br /
br /The side exstensions- work well for light material but overloaded by framing...we use a mobile table so its not an issue for us but I have heard others that table set this complain so...?
br /
br /the bevel- I have to say the weight distribution is high and this can make setting the bevel akward. The dewalts are a bit easier to set in this reguard.
br /
br /BOTTOM LINE: I could have bought any saw and I bought this one. I've used all of them so I bought it knowing what I was getting...and I use this one every day. It does have flaws...but they are minor and adaptable. And the smooth, straight, accurate cuts, fantastic fence, included laser, handle setup, table size, and hold downs more than make up for them.
br /
br /
br /PS: I have heard some complain about long term issues with accuracy...I have had no issues ...but I clean my saw at the end of each day with an air hose and tighten and check my settings before each cut. I believe that any issues have to go back to how you set up, handle, transport, and maintain your saw.

I have been a Bosch fan ever since my son bought me my first quality power tool over 10 years ago. That tool was a cordless drill/driver. Since that time I have bought a Bosch jig saw, Bosch plunge router, Bosch belt sander, Bosch random orbital sander, and now the Bosch 12" slide miter saw. When I made the purchase, I fully expected to receive a quality tool. The saw actually exceeded my expectations. The setup was easy. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. As the blade was square to the fence and square to the table right out of the box, there was very little to do to get the saw running. I mounted the laser washer on the arbor. Got a piece of scrap melamine and started making test cuts. At this time I received a pleasant surprise. The saw blade that was included with the saw is of the same high quality as the tool itself. If you have ever tried cutting melamine, you know how tricky it can be to get a clean cut on both sides of the material. This blade gave clean, chip free cuts on both the top and bottom of the melamine. The slide mechanism worked smoothly. The bevel and miter stops worked great. The only complaint, and it is a very small complaint, is that the dust collection bag doesn't collect very much dust. I hope that connecting the dust port to a shop vac or to a dust collector will solve that problem. Otherwise I am 100% happy with this tool and can add it to my growing collection of quality Bosch equipment. I am a hobby wood worker and I have several Delta, DeWalt, Hitachi, Porter Cable, and Jet power tools. I like all of them. But Bosch quality is as close to a safe bet as I have found. This saw is no exception.

I recently upgraded from a DeWalt compound miter saw because I wanted the extra capacity that the slide provides and expected greater accuracy from the built-in laser then I was getting from an aftermarket bolt-on I had added to my old one. The Bosch was a better price then the equivalent DeWalt so I decided to take a chance on a different brand. I have had good luck with Bosch (worm-drive saw, jigsaw, and whatnot) in the past and was definitely not disappointed this time around. In fact, the saw performs better than my expectations. I have had it for about a month now and get great, clean cuts with exceptional accuracy every time. The stock blade is good enough to cut through exotic hardwoods and even brass bar stock with ease. The 3 HP motor runs smooth and powerfully. Blade changing is a bit of a challenge and the dust collector bag is darn near useless, but that is no different than I have found from other brands. Good price/great saw. I am very happy with this purchase.

This miter saw is one of the best quality pieces of equipment I have purchased, ever. All angles and bevels checked out perfectly right out of the box. No problem with excess dust, I just back the saw, which I have mounted on a stand with wheels, right up to a big throat dust chute I have run to my lathe, and the dust is no problem. Additionally, the ambidextrous handle design, came in very handy when I injured my right thumb rendering it unusable, I simply rotated the handle around and used the saw with my left hand. I also like the laser guide, and don't have a problem with the way it operates. I also like the built it table extensions, which are retractable. I am a serious woodworker, and a retired professional craftsman, and would recommend this power tool to anyone, including professional woodworkers.

I have used this saw now for several weeks and believe it to be the best out there with only one major flaw. This saw is smooth, accurate and enjoyable to use. I previously owned the 12" Dewalt and purchased the Bosch for the superior control placement. The major flaw with this Bosch is the PATHETIC dust bag. The engineer who designed this obviously never used it. A simple modification could improve this feature tremendously. Otherwise, I am extremely satisfied with this purchase. It's a great saw.

Great saw and Bosch has great customer service!

I decided to add crown molding, chair rails to my entire home, I have absolutely no experience with electric saws of any kind and I had never used a compound miter saw before I purchased the Bosch 5412L, the saw was true and square with no need for adjustments, the only saw I ever used was a plastic miter box to do one window casing. I figured I would buy the best saw with good reviews. I also purchased the Bosch portable stand with it. The saw is huge and it was a bit of a pain mounting it to the portable stand but I was done in about an hour. I ordered some angle tools and DVD's to help with the install. Two days after watching the Dvds and reading the books, I started installing 4.25" crown molding in my bathroom, I made all the cuts and then painted the molding on the floor before hanging it, everything was going great until I went to hang it in the morning before work after the paint had dried, when I went to hang it I noticed I had to make a small adjustment cut(I think it was do to the two coats of paint) but I was in a rush and ran down to the basement to make a "QUICK" cut but thats when I made dangerous mistake, I was in such a rush before work that I forgot to slide the upper fence to the side for the crown angle, I set the angles with the saw pulled foward and went to make the cut, I cut the crown but when I was pushing it through the molding I also went through the metal fence, I had about 10 metal splinters all in my head and face, thank goodness it missed my eyes and for no permanant damage, I will never rush or not use my protective eyewear ever again! I was so upset with myself and for what I did to my saw. I figured it was going to cost me some more money to replace the blade and fence, I called Bosch that same day and explained what I did, they sent me a new fence overnight for FREE! the 60 tooth blade is fine but after speaking with the service rep, he took the time and explained that I should get a blade with more teeth for fine finish work. The saw is great and the service was better. I am embarrassed for what I did but I am hoping it will keep someone else safe and from making the same mistake. Aside from my mistake the saw and stand are great. The bathroom looks fantastic. I cant wait to start a new room.

I am a relative novice woodworker and I purchased this saw to frame a 6in. wide partition wall; split up a larger room to make a bedroom and smaller play area. The ceiling was at an angle, not always 45deg, and this saw helped get the job done right. The sliding, miter, and dual bevel features facilitated many of the cuts I had to make. I've used a 12in dewalt (without sliding) and felt the bosch was at least as good, but the addition of the sliding feature on the bosch is worth the extra cost and cheaper than the dewalt 12in sliding miter. I only considered bosch and dewalt as options due to a combination of product experience and cost.

I have worked as a carpenter and Industrial Arts teacher for over twenty-five years. I have used many miter saws and recently, many compound sliding miter saws. This one, by a wide margin, is the best one I have ever used. The controls are intuitive and the scales readable. The manufacturing is first class. This is the saw I decided to purchase for myself. I highly recommend this excellent saw.

There is an old saying "Things of Quality pass the test of time!" This is by far the best saw I have ever owned. Built like a tank and hyper accurate...if you demand qaulity this is the saw for you!

My last saw was a Delta 12" laser it was adequate but this new Bosch 5412L 12" Dual Bevel Slide Miter Saw with Laser Tracking ROCKS...as we used to say in the Marines... It's a good piece of gear!

I just got mine today ($3.99 next day shipping with amazon prime). This saw is perfect right out of the box. Construction is first rate, as would be expected from a bosch product. The up front bevel lock is a great convenience. The only thing I didn't reallize is that the laser does not go on unless the blade is spinning...minor issue. Otherwise $469 for the saw, now with a free jigsaw by mail and Dewalt saw instantly....there is no better deal out there. Amazon prime is awesome...if you need tools fast, it pays for itself after one purchase.

I am a fine custom furniture maker and I decided that a 12" sliding miter saw was something that I needed.
br /I've used Bosch tools, particularly routers and sabre saws, a great deal and I've always been impressed with how rugged yet refined they are. I also looked at the Hitachi and the Makita 12" sliders, both brands that I'd had success with in the past, and at the DeWalt just because it had gotten such good press.
br /The Bosch won hands-down. It's powerful, deadly accurate, ergonomically sensible and everything that should be metal still is. The laser is simple to set up and makes fussy little angle adjustments very easy to do by eye.
br /It's one of those tools that do everything that you ask of it with ease and grace. I can't ask for more than that.

Bosch Miter Saw - Best available, BUT...

I bought this saw after much research (I am a contractor). Bosch generally makes great stuff and this is no exception, BUT there is room for improvement. The laser is generally a joke as it is not very bright (unless you use the saw in the dark) and only accurate to half a degree - your eye is more accurate (plus the blade needs to spin to activate it). Further, it is a bit of a nusiance to change its batteries or the blade, because of the way the blade shield is constructed. You need three hands to work on it. As others have noted, the dust bag is useless, but I didn't care about that anyway. The most important thing in my view is that unlike other saws (particularly all of the DeWalt line) the operator's handle keeps you safely clear of everything. The Dewalt products are designed to mash your thumb with the blade shield if you don't grab the handle just right. I mounted mine on a Ridgid rolling stand and I use portable rollers for long wood. Note that the sliding backplates are secured with a thumbscrew only on the outboard ends. Because the machining of these slides is so loose, the inboard ends will move up as much as a quarter inch! If you are holding them with a piece of wood pressed against the back edge and as you are cutting it slides up, you may get seriously hurt and/or damage the machine or your work when the blade grabs the wood. This fault is true of most all of the available saws. I really like using the up-front controls. The hold down clamp works, but I think the design is a bit funky. DeWalt's system is better in that regard. One last thing to note is that the provided wrenches do not have a secure home. It would be nice if they designed an on-board storage place for them. Overall, this is the best available, but do take care when operating it.

Loads of Features Can't Hide the Problems

My boss picked up one of these for us four months ago, mainly for finish/trim work. Out of the box, it seemed like a great saw, fully loaded with features. It's a very intelligently designed saw. However, as time went on, we found more and more problems with it, and some of the guys have chosen to go back to the old DeWalt rather then to deal with it.

First, the good: Dual bevel is extremely handy... all top-level saws should have this feature. Another feature I really liked were all the upfront controls, so there's no leaning over the table to adjust the bevel. It makes working with the saw and adjusting much quicker. It also gives you quite a lot of table width for working on.

The bad: During the first month, we quickly grew tired of the fact that the saw seemed very stiff when adjusting the bevel. I read through the manual and even tried adjusting the nut in the back, but nothing worked. It's just a very stiff saw to work with. Not a big deal when jumping from 0 to 45 degrees, but when you try to adjust it 1 degree, the saw has a tendency to stick, then jump a few degrees when more pressure is applied.

The second month, we started noticing inaccuracies in the cuts... cuts weren't square when they were suppose to be. Sometimes the cut was perfect, and other times the cut was out of line, suggesting there was some play between the saw guide and the blade. Also, the laser tracking began a 'delay' between when the saw was started and when the laser would turn on. It used to turn on with the saw, but it began turning on after the saw was running for 2-3 seconds.

The third month, the inaccurate cuts became more frequent and the laser tracking delay was up to 5-7 seconds. In addition, the belt was apparently loosening because when starting the saw you can here a bit of a 'chirp' and cutting through thick wood on a bevel sometimes cause the blade to stop spinning, which included a very loud 'screeching' noise.

As of today, the laser tracking only goes on intermittently, often not at all. There is also quite a bit of side-to-side play in the slide, which the manual doesn't seem to explain how to fix. This has caused inaccurate bevel cuts. Aside from the dual bevel feature, it's now on par with the five year old DeWalt saw we have, which has now quickly becoming our main saw again. The Bosch saw just doesn't seem to be able to keep up with extended and frequent use.

Bosch has made a saw with a lot of intelligent and useful features. If they can find a way to bring up the overall quality, this would definitely be an outstanding product. Until then, this is not something you should use in a professional environment.

Bosch's could get a five star if they'll reexamine the way they designed the dust blower. After the cut, it's only 20% of dust go inside the bag, the rest are around the saw and you can't even see the miter & bevel scale adjustment. Bosch dust bag are useless compare to Dewalt saws. This saw made in Taiwan so they've used a cheap screw on the back of blade adjustments. Therefore, be careful when you do a 45 degrees blade adjustment.

Have had this saw for a little over a week, and was pleasantly pleased with it. But I found that there is a lot of play in the slide rails from side to side(bevel) The loose side is the side where the slide clamp is, and when you loosen it you can move it side to side a couple of degrees, and of course if you tighten the slide clamp then the slide funcion is useless. Just wonder if there is an adjustment for it, if not I will be trading this is for the 12 inch makita.
br /On the upside the tool has plenty of power, the slide action itself is smooth, controls are user friendly, I won't comment too much on the blade because I always put a freud on my saws.

Dead on accurate. I don't agree with some of the other reviews on this subject. The dust bag is USELESS when working with MDF but seems to be fine with hardwoods. Had a 10" Delta for several years and my use outgrew it. The Bosch has been a superb replacement and will probably satisfy all of my future needs - no upgrades foreseen or imagined. I've used it for everything from fine furniture to bulkhead (sea-wall) construction and it has performed excellently. Paired with the sturdy but inexpensive Stablemate stand makes a great package.

The construction is better than most of what passes for quality tools these days. After four jobs, nothing has fallen off, no slip from settings, no disappointments at all.
Saw was well packaged, and UPS delivered without damage. When this saw goes on sale, and shipping is free, don't wait!

This saw is equally as good as I hoped. It came from the factory with perfect settings, is smoother, quieter and more powerful than the premium brand name 15 amp compound miter(not sliding) I was using. I cut solid oak boards over 8" wide so the sliding feature is very convenient. The adjustments for different angles are faster and more convenient than the prevous saw. The laser is very convenient and accurate. I am still getting adjusted to the safety start button. It is just a bit less convenient than the previous saw but I think I will get used to it. Very fast shipment, well packaged.

This Bosch miter saw is the cadillac. Is has all the features plus a few extra features like the built in tool handle to remove the blade, depth adjustment so you can actually cut an even channel/rabbit, and a impressive out of the box perfect alignment with little or no adjustments. The only thing I am not pleased with is the dust collection. It seems everything misses the little bag that is attached because I have been using this saw for several months and there is nothing in the bag. My previous saw, Dewalt, did a much better job collecting the sawdust. Overall though this is the top off the line and all the bells and whistles are included in the price.

Huge capacity, up-front controls, accurate. Worth buying the Freud or Forrest blades. I'd have went with the Makita as I think it's even more solid but I can't stand the vertical handle, (the Bosch's is adjustable.) This slider needs a lot of room behind it, so you can't put it tight up against a wall; from the wall to the front of the saw is about 3.5-4'.

I purchased this saw from Amazon a month ago and luv it. The saw is noticably quieter than my old Rigid, cuts cleaner then a hot knife though butter and more solid then my parteners Dewalt. having the bevel lock in the front is so much faster when cutting crown. Only real downfall is the positive stop for the bevel, once set it's a little hard to pull out again.
br /Also note the Festool is coming out with their version called Kapex which has all the same feature as this 5412 with the addion of a lazer on both sides of the blade and zero clearance slide. Since Festool makes the best of any carpenter tool, to see them copy Bosch design is awesome. And the 5412 is $300 cheaper.

I'm a do it yourselfer (intermediate) and have been recently upgrading all of my tools to Bosch, Hitachi and Makita. I sprung for the Bosch 5412L 12" , its "brother" miter table the Bosch TracRac, and it's second cousin the Bosch Digital Protractor DWM40LK. Shipping arrived on time and free, no problems at all. My first words when I opened the box was "WOW", this is a serious tool (at least it looks like it is worth $600 big ones). There is nothing to getting the Miter saw setup, but the table takes a beginner like me about an hour to get setup and the saw in place. Make sure and hold the arbor button in and KEEP turning the wheel until it catches (laughing at myself). Trust me, get the Bosch miter table and the crown molding accessories as they make my life so much easier cutting crown molding for my new kitchen cabinets. I purchased a Forrest Chopmaster blade because of the good reviews and I needed something to make perfect cuts as the crown molding I purchased was expensive. Using the Bosch digital protractor, I easily get my Miter angle and Bevel angle and turn the dials on the saw and whammo, perfect cuts. I have a lot of crown molding (with a 38 degree spring angle) to put up and saved so much money buying the equipment and doing this myself. I am not a professional by any means, so in summary: Bosch 12" Miter saw perfect 10/10, Bosch Digital Protractor 10/10, and Bosch Miter table 9.5/10 because they forgot two washers and didn't supply enough pictures for D.A.'s like me, but once you set it up, we r talking a serious, serious cutting machine. Oh yeah, this can easily be set up by yourself but you may want to bribe a friend when attaching it to the stand...

I bought this saw specifically to do one job for a very particular client. The lady wanted large crown molding. I currently had a 10" miter saw which was not big enough for the crown and in the past have either used or owned most all of the major brands of miter saws. Any way this saw is awesome. Out of the box it didn't need any adjustment. I've been using it for 3 months now still hasn't lost its calibration yet. The up front bevel control is probably the best innovation I've seen in a miter saw yet. The saw is built like a tank (one of the minor problems with it is; it is heavy). I'm a perfectionist and this saw meets my needs and the needs/expectations of my clients. The only cons are that the laser is arbor mounted, so it can not be switched from side to side of the blade, but face it lasers are not accurate enough for fine finish carpentry anyway, and the dust bag is a joke it doesn't catch anything. But if you want an accurate saw that makes precision cuts each time, buy this saw and spend two extra minutes cleaning up the sawdust.

I own the 10" model of this saw and love it. When I was looking to upgrade from my old Dewalt 12" I was lucky enough to talk to someone who pointed out to me precisely what some other reviewers here mention: You are going to get a LOT more deflection (blade warp) with a 12" blade. Another great point - 10" blades are lots cheaper than 12". I have yet to find myself going - damn, I wish I had gotten the bigger saw. With the sliding feature I can cross-cut anything up to the point where I should be using a radial arm saw anyway. I use the saw for both framing and finish and get perfect cuts. As for that old Dewalt - it has been demoted to chop saw for plastic and metal, which is about all it ever was good at.

I bought this saw primarily for cutting up crown molding for a remodel job. The Miter stops were spot on right out of the box. Double checking with a protractor confirmed. Cuts a very repeatable.
The in box blade is OK for chopping up 2x4's, but you really need a finer blade for trimwork.
Really does excellently for that. The clamp is especially nice. It's a lever clamp instead of a screw down and it's very fast to use.
All in all, well worth it.

Bought this one when my dewalt 708 walked away (even a locked truck isn't safe on a site while your at lunch). Certainly the most I've spent on a saw in a while, but with every bell and whistle already on it, it seemed like a good deal. At first, the trigger was annoying to use because it had a thumb release before you could squeeze, where as the 708 you could start the motor easier. 2 hours into a job i used the saw as if the thumb button was not there (so why is it?) The Dewalt also had a nicer downstop, although honestly i don't really use it that often and this one is fine.

Dust bag--- useless. Give me a clean T shirt in box instead.

I don't know how that bevel lock actually works in this machine, being in the front, but it does and is awesome.

In restrospect, I don't use half the stuff on this tool, namely the rotating handle and laser for instance, and hope these things dont complicate the saw to the point where it breaks down for something stupid. As long as nothing stupid breaks, i'll probably buy another after the next job on the wrong side of town.

I ended up getting this saw for $473 during a great promotion Amazon was running. At that price I couldn't pass it up. It is loaded with versatilty and features. If there is a downside it is the saw's footprint. It takes up a lot of space from front to back. You'll also have to replace the stock blade if you plan on using this for fine woodworking or trimwork. Other than that it is great. The hold down, extending sides, bevel-lock and adjustable handles are all great features that complement a great saw.

This is my first sliding miter saw - so I have limited experience and exposure with them. Assembly was simple. I have completed three projects (including a rolling table for the saw) and have no complaints with the performance of the saw. The only drawback is the dust collection system - it is seriously lacking (but my older, non-sliding saw is the same, so I assume this is simply something one must deal with unless you have a dust collection system). I recommend this saw.

I would agree with the other reviewer. I have a dust collection system on all the woodworking tools in my garage/shop. Before the system I always had a mess to clean up. Now the only clean-up I do is created by this saw. Other than this, I've owned it for several months now and find it still cuts smooth and acurate every time. My laser hasn't gone through any batteries and cuts dead on. I wish it had a right side laser, but I'm right handed and it's safer from me to cut with my right hand anyway. All and all I am quite happy and got a great deal on Amazon. Saved an additional $100.00 with coupon codes and discounts.

This is a very nice tool. As you use it you appreciate the fact that someone who knoows tools put some thought into this one. The set up is straightforward, albeit a little tme consuming...but the saw is so nicely adjustable that you get cuts that are within a couple of thousanths over the 12" chop. The depth stop is a particularly nice feature, but I find that the length stops are the feature I appreeciate and use the most. These can be used either left or right, are easily adjustable and lockable. The laser thing is worthless and distracting for close work, but I haven't taken it off yet as it makes rough cuts real easy; We'll see what happens when I change a blade.

The Bosch co. has thought of pretty much everything when designing this saw. it has the capacity to cut just about any size moulding at any angle. It has a smooth starting and running motor. More gadgets then anyone will ever need. I've used or had saws by Dewalt and Makita and I like this one the best.

The Bosch 5412L miter saw has the best of both worlds---size capabiliity and versatility. Its powerful motor and wide work surface has been a major plus in using this tool. I wish they had made one 20 years ago. hk

This saw has a lower price than DeWalt and includes the laser tracking and a lot of other nice features that are not found on others. I've owned and used a lot of saws and this is the nicest one I've seen. I'm very happy with the purchase.

This saw has preformed great for me. The bevel lock release being located up front is wonderful. The saw came set up straight out of the box. I was surprised how clean of a cut the stock blade produced so I didn't even have to mount my freud blade. My only complant is the dust bag. The problem is it does't catch any of the finer dust at all and under closer inspection I can see why. You can see daylight through weave on the bag but no tool is perfect but this bosch tool will have a Dewalt dust bag on it.

Love this saw, BUT, you need to buy the Forrest 12" miter blade to go with it to make it 5 stars. With the stock blade I give it 3 stars. The Forrest blades are that good. No tearout whatsoever, and cuts like butter.
br /
br /Much more enjoyable to use than my old Bosch 10" slider, because of the variable handle orientation, better mechanism for the safety cover, and all bevel controls up front.

Well after researching this saw for while & wanting a sliding miter saw I had two choices the 12 inch Makita or the Bosch, I stuck with the Bosch 5412 ,My lovely wife bought it for me for x-mas off Amazon , great shipping received in perfect coditions, I pulled it out of the box & put the laser on & had to use my own tools because didn't relize that the saw came with a tool to remove nut on blade to place the laser , but anyway no biggie, & just used it about four or five times so far for personel use, & I gotta say just like alot of people state for such an exspensive saw the dust bag is not all that great , but everything else about the saw is excellent, It'll take a little to get use to but everything is pretty illustrated on the machine which is very helpfull! Excellent saw I'd go as far as saying the top of the line out their right now!

would highly recommend. it replaced my dewalt 12" miter saw.

pros:
-smooth start up (torque doesnt make handle jump like dewalt)
-very easy/convenient controls, easy to see and all up front
-nice features: pull-out material supports, material clamp, etc
-works with my old dewalt miter saw stand

cons:
- hard to fine-tune adjustments
- hash marks for angle degrees are too wide for precise cutting
- the saftey switch on the trigger is a pain - esp for lefthanded cutting
- should come with a free visit to the chiropractor: very heavy and awkward compared to non-sliding model

Best in Class by far!

I read several reviews, spent over 40 hours of research in comparing DeWalt, Hitachi, Ridgid, and Bosch. I'm a loyal DeWalt user of multiple tools, but have recently been impressed with Ridgids lifetime warranty and own a few other ridgid tools that hold up very well. But Hey, we're talking about sliding miter saws aren't we. This is the smoothest most accurate saw I've ever used. I love it. My DeWalt was a 12" but not sliding and it has a little kick when it starts. The bosch starts up smooth and continues to run that way. I have nothing negative to say but one comment to add. I did purchase the DeWalt 723 Heavy Duty Miter Saw Stand. The Bosch mounting holes are offset and therefore I had to bolt down some wood and then put the saw on top and screw it into the wood, so if you want a stand you might think about the Bosch stand, however I think DeWalt has the edge on overall stand features.

used it 6 months and its now collecting dust in my garage. Unless you keep your blade on this saw ultra sharp it will run out. I've gone back to 10"inch saws namely the Makita, best saw for your money hands down by me. I have 2 10" makitas and absolutely love them. I've been cutting wood for 30 years and have used near to all the saws out there......the makita is the best I've found and the hitachi's come in second. And I'm not Japanese...lol. Btw in addition you'll get 5 times more life out of the makita 10'blade too.......why is that?

First let me say that I love this saw - except. This saw was purchased to replace both my miter saw and radial arm saw and does everything that I wanted it to do. However, the dust collection system is a joke. As a miter saw, the dust collector works poorly. At full extension, the collector is non existent. This is a great saw that could be improved.

Just to add a bit to the existing excellent reviews, I'm having quite a bit of fun cutting 4x4s. This a monstrous power device. It's like something they might use in Warhammer 40K. Massive. Picking up my 9 year old is easier, although it does come with nice pick-up handles. Like people have said, the dust bag doesn't help because some of the wood gets powdered and the rest seems to get aerosolised (lol). I made two test cuts through a 1x3 and began to cough and then to get an itchy nose and throat. So a person can really get lung disease and sinus problems if the right protective gear is not used. I eventually put on a surgical mask and then put half the device out the door of the shed to exhaust the dust. Laser is easily mounted on the blade by removing the original outer-facing arbor washer and replacing it with the laser which is essentially like a thick washer. The housing for the laser is dense metal, well-made, and is powered by three button batteries, and it is activated inertially when the blade reaches a certain angular speed. Three extra button batteries are included. There is a neat hex/phillips-head tool which is included with the saw - it fits into a small compartment behind the fence. The sliding fence slides very nicely. Ahh... they really didn't miss the details on this device. So well-engineered... so much wood... so much time to cut it all in the silence of the night. Amazon shipped it to me in TWO days. Amazon rules.

This is one great saw. I bought a sliding miter saw on the recommendations of friends, instead of a radial arm saw. Despite my inclination for the larger cutting width of the DeWalt model, I was impressed with other owner's reviews. Based on these reviews and price value I went with the Bosch saw.
br /
br /The saw is accurate right out of the box and changing the blade was not difficult as mentioned. You do have to ensure that the blade gets seated properly on the spindle, because it can slip a little and be secured incorrectly when adding the laser guide.
br /
br /The dust port only catches minimal dust when hooked to a vacuum. Tthe center of the neck of the saw is so wide that all the dust hits the neck and bounces all over. The area is so small it's not possible to get any adequate dust collector behind the blade. A "U" shaped dust collector that would catch the deflected saw dust would be of value.
br /
br /Other improvements would be left and right side laser guide and more stop blocks on the fence. When small pieces don't reach the stop block on the fence, it's hard mount a clamped one due to the cast supports on the back of the fence. You can overcome this by sliding the top of the fence laterally to use the "flat area", but added on stop would be better.

Initial quality on the saw was great... until I used the saw. The bladed wobbled so bad that the whole machine shook. I called Bosch technical support and they gave me no advice except to return it to where I bought it from. Some help! I am not even convinced that that there is not a simple fix, but since technical support provided no SUPPORT, I guess I'll return it and hope the next one is better.

Received the saw in good shape....assembly was easy; setup accuracy was not a problem. But there was one major disappointment...with a hefty price tag as this machine carries, I expected a beautifully smooth cut from the blade....the blade is terrible, it was not sharp, it splinters hardwood and softwood. To make a decent cut, you have to very slowly enter the blade into the wood....if you do this, you might get a satisfactory cut. This blade is not good enough to cut 2 x 4's on a building site. I plan to use this in finish carpentry and trim work.

Other than the blade disappointment, the machine is very good. More stars would be available if the machine was complete with a quality blade.

A Forrest blade is on order to replace this poor quality blade.

After the glowing reviews above, I went to the local Home Depot to check this saw out before buying it. To my dismay I discovered that the saw is made in Taiwan and reflects it in the feel of its craftsmanship, despite what the people at Bosch would have you believe by touting the 'Bosch' name and the "made in Germany or Switzerland or USA" that it implies. If you're a Norm-wannabe, buy this saw and you may be happy with it. To others who cringe at the thought of "Asian import" and "quality tools" used in the same sentence, run--don't walk--from this tool.

The tool salesman at my favorite hardware store showed me how the Bosch 5412L slide mechanism is geometrically out of alignment. At zero degrees miter, slide the saw forward and align a square between the back fence and the left side of the saw blade. Next slide the saw to the back. Notice the quarter inch gap between the left side of the saw blade and the square. For any sliding compound miter saw over $500.00 I would expect no gap. How can Bosch sell such junk and expect the Bosch name to be respected?

This is a good saw. But if there is a rebate offer, beware, because...

Hello Amazon,

I bought a Bosch chop saw from Amazon a few month ago. With it there was an offer for a free jig saw. I sent in the receipt, the form and the UPC code. I received the below email, and after calling both the rebate center and Bosch, got nowhere.

I hope that you at Amazon can help me.

I would have bought the chop saw anyway. I have many Bosch tools, including a jig saw, which is on its way out, so a new one would have been nice. I like the chop saw. But now I am pissed off. And when I go to replace my jig saw I'll probably go with the Metabo or the Festool, both of which are excellent tools. If I buy the Festool, it won't be through Amazon, because you don't carry it.

So the below rebate company will have cost both Bosch and Amazon business. I go through a lot of power tools. It's my business.

Sincerely,

GM
