Im a carpenter with 15 years experience - speaking of portable table saws - Ive used the Bosch 4000, a few Delta's, the Ryobi's, the Makita 8 and 10" table saws, over the years.... I gave this product a poor review overall because of its poorly designed rack and pinion system which is easily compromised in the course of ordinary use. pThe good:br1. solid table topbr2. not too heavy for the average man to liftbr3. stand is also not to heavy or bulky to load br4. Easy to eject debris from the chute if you happen to have anypThe Weird:bra. no built in cord storage or wraparound. If you need to make a coupla quick cuts and dont need to bother setting up the stand, you will find no way to sit the saw on the floor without it crimping the AC power cord. Ugh !brb. if you need to carry the saw around much you may easily find the miter tool falling straight out of it's 'holder' (eg a slot in the plastic housing of the unit). pThe Ugly:brI. The saw's rack and pinion system absolutely is a mess. In the course of ordinary cuts by multiple ordinary carpenters on one job, our saw's fence was consistently needing to be readjusted. Some carpenters figured out the flaw and were able to overcome it - but some were not. The secret lies in the way the rack and pinion gears are layed out - the rack gear moves back and forth, from left to right, as you would expect, but the pinion gear (which you would think would remain stationary) -can move up and down, enough to allow the two gears to become unbinded. UGH! Once this unbinding occurs, the fence *will* be out of parallel to the saw blade. Then you are left hoping to 'rebind' the gears after guessing which teeth need to 'mate'. Oh joy !pWe found thru use that even moving the saw from room to room, or from truck to jobsite, was enough to cause the gears to unbind. pEventually, you discover that the Bosch 4000 is the saw to buy if you've got a $500 budget and need portability.

I bought this saw a year ago and am pleased with it's power. The motor has ample torque through full sheets of plywood and solid hardwood. There is no loss of power with a dado blade and makes smooth cuts. But the accuracy is somewhat in doubt. The rack and pinion rails are accurate unless you push the fence by hand all the way to the right to th maximim rip capacity , one of the racks skip a gear tooth or two throwing the fence out of square. A double check with a tape measure fixes this.I have tried to adjust this without any success. I do however have to show every body how to adjust the fence for the first time. If you are careful this is not to major. The mitre slots and mitre gauge are a bit sloppy making for inaccurate and uneven cuts. I emailed Dewalt support 11 months ago and have had no response. The folding saw stand is sturdy and easy to store. The optional side and outfeed are great attachments that make handling bigger pieces a breeze.Overall you will be stisfied with this saw.

I've been a carpenter for 13 years and used to own an old cast iron Craftsman table saw. It about gave you a hernia to move it. It also had an 8" blade that was never high enough, and a fence you always had to whack with your hand to square up. We bought the Dewalt DW744 back when it first came out (1994/95?) and we LOVE IT. The fence stays true and square, can be adjusted fairly easily, and the motor seems to take anything you throw at it. (unless you're using an undersized extention cord!)pWe haven't had many problems with our Type 1 saw. So when I wanted to buy another table saw for the company, I only saw 2 options: The Dewalt DW744 or the Bosch 4000 (copy...).pHaving recently purchased the Dewalt, I was dismayed when I took it out of the box and immediately noticed that Dewalt has cut quite a few corners since they came out with the Type 1. I assume that most of these changes were made to make the saw lighter, but to me, anything is lighter than that old cast iron Craftsman. pFirst, they made the fence lighter by using thinner metal and plastic parts. I don't like it. Compared to the fence on the older model, it feels cheap. It also takes some effort to push it on and off (as if it needs to be "broke in") and you need to fiddle with it to lock it down, whereas I could slap the fence on the older model with my eyes closed.pSecond, the throat plate is also made from lighter cheaper material. I guess this was another corner they figured they could cut.pThird, the rails which the fence clamps to are now made from an aluminum alloy. Formerly they were made from Chromed steel. Sure, they won't rust if you frequently work in the rain, but I'm concerned they the aluminum rails will dent or bend over years of use. Again, a few ounces were trimmed from the weight of the saw.pAnother minor change they made was to the table surface. In the original Type 1, the table surface was coated with a smooth "teflon" type material that was smooth as glass and was GREAT to work on. After using this saw for about 8 years, yes some of it has come off- especially in the infeed and outfeed areas. Dewalt is now coating the surface with a similar product which seems "thicker" but it is not as smooth. In fact, it feels like 60 grit sandpaper. I don't like it.pThey also moved the location of the fence lock. They moved it way out to the right of the saw where you have to look for it. I liked it much better in the middle where you could keep your hands centered on the saw to make all your adjustments. I have to search for that [darn] lock every time. pThe motor has always "jumped" on startup (both models). The blade noticeably wobbles on startup, and this concerns me. It makes me wonder if the motor needs a larger shaft and bigger bearings. If it wobbles on startup, its eventually also going to wobble through some heavy wood when you're trying to achieve a smooth cut. We also had to order a new arbor wrench for our old Dewalt a few years back, because it had rounded on the arbor. Cheap stuff.pNo one seems to have mentioned these changes before, so when I opened the box they were news to me. I always assumed that Dewalt made things better as they came out with new models- Type 2, Type 3, etc. Seems to me they have cut corners on this saw. Having said all this, I'm not taking away from the brilliance of the design of this saw. It makes nice cuts, and when it's all cleaned up, everything works smoothly. I especially like the new redesigned stand. It opens and folds easily. I'd like to see them make a similar stand for their miter saws. If they don't make one soon I might have to learn to weld.pSo if you are torn between buying the DW744 and the Bosch 4000, all I can say is: Look at both saws in person. Try them out if you can. Thats something I never got the chance to do. Bosch has a few things going for it, and if I would have known all the corners that Dewalt has cut, I might have leaned more in Bosch's direction. But there's no sense crying over spilled milk. I better learn to be happy with my new Dewalt.pAddendum: It has been a year since my purchase of the DW744S, so I thought I would give you an update. We're still using the old type 1 saw that I mentioned in the introduction, and I would still rather use it (now 10 years old) than use the new one I purchased here just over a year ago.pI curse the cheap parts everytime I use this saw. Especially the cheap fence with the plastic parts on each end. That is my biggest gripe. (I would be a happy man if Dewalt would just happen to read this review and send me a new one.) pAdditionally, the table surface wore off immediately on the infeed and outfeed areas. Although it seemed thicker initially, it looks worse than the saw I've been using daily for 10 years.pAs for the aluminum alloy rails, they have held up thus far, but when you move the fence it is much squeekier than our older model. It needs cleaning and lubrication more frequently, it seems.pAs for the stand, it folds nicely, but compared to the older version, it sways more from side to side due to a lack of crossmembers.pIn conclusion, after a year, I still wish I had looked more closely at the "other" brand.

If you want fine results from a "portable" table saw, look no futher. As a self employed custom woodworker for over 23 years, I have used just about every portable saw out there. I bought this saw over a year ago at a tool show where I had the oppertunity to test saws from several companies like Bosch, Makita, Delta, and others. In my opinion, this one beat them all HANDS DOWN!pThe stand is remarkably stable. (My test was to rip a 12 foot pressure treated 2x8 with no outfeed support) This was the ONLY saw there that did not "tip" at ALL. It's lightwieght, the base allows stable set up on 2x's over horses, it has enough power to cut anything (and I use a Freud Diablo 80 T that's rated for a much stronger saw) and get fast, mirror finish cuts in all materials (soft and hard) every time. The dust collection is great. You have a choice between a standard shop vac hookup OR, just pull 2 pins and remove the collector cover and set a garbage can under it. Both work very well. In fact, even if you don't use a vac, just set your garbage can about 2 feet behind it and the vac chute will get "most" of it in there. This baby was built to be portable. With nicely out-of-the-way storage for Blades, Wrenches, and Cross Cut Slde, I have everything I need at all times. But the absolute BEST feature to me is that "Rack Pinion fence". DEADLY ACCURATE! So fast and simple that, if I could not get another one, I would not sell this saw for Three Times what I paid. I did have to set this saw up when I got it. To sqaure, paralell the fence and make sure all the indicators were right on, took me about 15 minutes (Very Accesable, Simple Adjustments). In over a year of heavy use, I have NEVER had reset anything (except the rip gauge for different blade thickness of course, also quick easy).pI have only one "very small" complaint that would not prevent me buying it again. The rip width measuring tape is a stick on strip that started coming off at one end, (kind of cheap in my view) but a little clear silicone and an overnight drying and it's better than new. pDON'T LOOK ANY FURTHER...If you want the BEST on site results from a 10" saw...This puppy's it!!pChris Albrecht

I've had this saw for a year now. I have a small shop and didn't want to sacrifice the permanent square footage for a stationary cabinet model. So I was only looking for a portable...but a good portable. I am not a professional in any trade, but am a very seasoned DIY'er, particularly with woodworking. I've made a few pieces of furniture with the saw and I don't regret its purchase at all. Here are my thoughts on this item:
br /
br /POSITIVES
br /
br /1) Portability, portability, portability. I usually have it set up on the leg stand in my shop, buy have needed to transport it mutliple times either inside my house or to other sites I worked at.
br /
br /2) The 15 amp motor is impressively beefy, considering it is a portable, and cuts quite nicely through any wood I've tried so far (including oak and birch).
br /
br /3) The folding legs are easy to set up and EXTREMELY sturdy when the saw is on and properly bolted on (bolts are not included though...)
br /
br /4) The fence is great. Easily adjusts and stays true and parallel (a minor flaw though...see below).
br /
br /NEGATIVES
br /
br /1) When saw dust gets built up on the pinion gears for the fence adjusting mechanism, the gear(s) sometimes slip over one tooth and the fence gets out of parallel. However, you'll easily know when it happens (if you don't notice it by eye, you'll quickly notice the wood binding up in the blade!) However, it is a quick and easy fix by hand to put it back parallel...and impetus to keep your tools clean.
br /
br /2) The blade guard is relatively cheaply built and a nuisance. Although it is a cardinal sin, I never use the guard.
br /
br /3) The open ended arbor wrench stripped open a little bit after a few months of moderate use. I switched a lot between a ripping, cross cutting and dado blades when making two pieces of furniture. The mouth on the open ended wrench seemed to have stretched out a little and would slip off the arbor when I was trying to tighten/loosen the arbor nut. After banging up my knuckles a few times, I ordered a new wrench from the DeWalt service center near me (only costs about $2). Unfortunately, a normal open-ended wrench is too wide to fit in...you need to use the thin DeWalt wrench.
br /
br /4) The combo blade that comes with it is relatively cheap. It cuts fine through most woods, but leaves blade marks. Also, there is more splintering/tearing than I would like when cutting through plywood. I highly recommend splurging on a Forrest Woodworker II blade and dampener. Flawless cuts on this was with the Forrest blade.
br /
br /Overall, I absolutely love this tool. The price seems high (and sort of is considering it is portable), but the DeWalt quality is worth it compared to the much cheaper Ryobi and Makita models. The negatives I have listed are fairly minor; mere nuisances with easy fixes. Be sure to check the fine tuning of the fence width ruler and parallelness of the fence. I had to tweak them a little before I first used the saw to get everything just right. If you need portability and want to save space but don't want to sacrifice a lot of the benefits of a cabinet saw, this tool is a must!

You get what you pay for.

It is rather expensive considering it is a portable model. However, I can do anything with this saw that I can do on a full size saw plus one. I can do it anywhere I want. Because it is portable though, you might have to be a little more careful with some cuts.br brYou have to talk about the fence first, it is without equal for a factory fence. Yeah, you can pull it off the gears if you try but you were doing it wrong if it gets out of alignment. It's not that tough to get it straight again, and when it's straight it stays that way until you do something wrong again.pIt has plenty of power to do what ever you want. The start up is a little discomforting because it jumps when it gets to full speed in a very short amount of time. pSome people have complained about the blade guard, I know its a no-no but I never put it on once. For woodworking they all get in the way no matter how well they are designed. pIt is an extremely well built saw. Even with the cheap rough blade included with it you make really impressive cuts, upgrade to a high quality blade and it will outperform a lot of the large saws from most companys. pYou just have to remember that you are buying a portable saw, and you have to be creative on how you approach some types of cuts, but it will do anything you ask of it.

A GOOD JOBSITE TABLE SAW

I have used this saw for three years now and have found it to be one of the best jobsite portable table saws on the market. What distinguishes this saw is its' fence. The rack and pinion adjustment makes it easy to dial in your measurement and keeps the fence perfectly parallel to the blade. As other reviewers have mentioned the miter gauge is pretty useless but I use a sliding compound miter saw for making mitered cuts so this is not a big deal for me. This is not a cabinet saw, it works fine ripping framing lumber and paint grade finish work.
br /My one bit of advice for anyone considering buying this saw is to not buy it online.I recieved this saw as a gift from my family and when it arrived at my house the box looked like a big yellow boulder. Every corner was smashed in and there were a few large tears in the box as well. When I unpacked the box and inspected the saw I realized that the rails that guide the telescoping fence were bent. Amazon customer service was very understanding and paid for the return postage. Amazon does nothing to prepare this saw for shipping. The box it comes in is not meant for individual shipping direct to consumers. There is no padding of any kind. This saw is meant to be shipped stacked with other saw boxes on a pallet and then shrink wrapped. This is how retailers receive shipments. I would advice everyone to not purchase large tools such as table saws, miter saws or compressors from mail order companies. You might have no problem and your items might arrive in perfect condition but there is a good chance what you receive will be damaged. Making matters worse is you will have to ship the item back and wait a long time to receive a replacement. Prices online are generally better than what you can get from local retailers but considering the hassles of dealing with problems I would rather pay a little more knowing I can get immediate satisfaction form my local tool retailer. Amazon is fine for buying small power tools that often come shipped in their own protective case but I would seriously recomend if you are buying any large heavy tools to make your purchase locally.

what i didnt like:br1.) TOO MUCH WORK TO CHANGE A BLADE GUARD: If you don't practice it 3 or 4 times, the BLADE GUARD takes a little time to remove and install PROPERLY. You have to do the adjusting yourself with very little mechanisms to guide its correct placement. This used to worry me a little bit since the stem of the blade guard is very close to the circular path of the blade itself.p2.)also, the uneven placement of the railings gives the illusion of the fence being out-of-square, when in fact, THE FENCE IS ACTUALLY TRUE.p3.)the blade flops over everytime i release the locking mechanism to change the bevel adjustment. that's simply annoying but i can live with it since it's just a minor inconvenience.p4.)"just a personal gripe": as with all the other portable benchtops, the distance from the edge of the table to the blade is all soooooo scarce... i wonder why they don't simply make an extension at the front the machine instead of letting us jig it ourselves.pwhat i liked:p1.) it's just a handsome unit..plain and simple.. just like my other Dewalt tools!p2.) there's lots of torque.. it's rated at 2.5 horses on the manual.p3.) the base is big and so is the portable bench that goes underneath it. i especially like the fact that the rear legs are noticeably longer than the front legs.. there's much more support underneath the machine than the Porter Cable 3718.p4.) you can mount it on horses, the bench that it comes with, on a plywood base, etc... very much like the porter cable 3718.p5.) and lastly, although i had some dislikes about the installation/removal of the blade guard, i like the fact that, once it is on, it worries me much less than the quick release system that is equipped with the Porter Cable. Especially since it is held down by 2 bolts and a plate and lip structure.. i'm very confident that it won't come off as i'm ripping and that it will also do it's job to prevent kickbacks. pAll in all, i love my saw.. it's not perfect.. but definitely very usable and SAFE, especially as a contractor's/job site saw.

Great Fence, Poor Coating on Table

The fence is way better than anything else out there. It is a real pleasure to be able to get a precise, solid adjustment easily. I like the ergonomics of the whole assembly, including the locking handle. The adjustment for blade thickness is easy and smart - so easy that I actually make the adjustment, rather than skip it like with my other saw and my previous saw. The rest of the saw conforms to the typical high quality that I find in my yellow tools, of which I have far too many. The one negative is the coating on the table. Even on the first use, it started wearing away. I read about it in another review, but thought the writer must have used some heavy, abrasive stock on the saw. I got wear on the coating by ripping a 1X4X4' #3 pine board. I expect to use this saw for years, but I am certain that the coating on the table will be worn through in no time. What were they thinking when they put a ten cent coating on a million dollar saw? It is beyond my comprehension. I gave them four stars because this mistake is just too stupid to ignore. I still love the saw and would buy it again in spite of the coating because it is otherwise such a pleasure to use.

It has good power but I am concerned about the blade wobble on startup; it lasts less than a second but the question I have is will it be an issue as the saw ages? I wish the blade was belt driven but the power switch is easy enough to get to should you bind the blade up. But a table saw is only as good as its fence. This one is dead on and you don't have to worry about it losing it's accuracy as it ages. I have thrown 4X8 sheets of plywood, crosscuts, and hardwoods at it, as well as ripped a pressure treated 2X12 and there is no movement on the back end of the fence.

Dewalt really did some thinking when they designed this saw. I own two of these saws. The rack and pinion fence system keeeps the the whole fence parralell to the blade. The saws tape measure is dead on, just set it,lock it and cut it. The saw has the ability to rip a 4x8 sheet of ply in half. I also own a Makita table saw and the Dewalt blows it away. As with any tool take some time when you get it to adjust the fence, blade, measurement indicator andt-square and you will have trouble free operation

This saw was the perfect saw for my purposes until I started having ON/OFF switch problems. The switch does not have a "Fail Safe Mode". The contacts weld together which prevents turning the saw off. This is a safety concern for me.

I purchased this saw Jan 03 and I have run it through the paces. It is faily light weight yet extremely stable when mounted on the folding stand. At first I had my doubts as to whether the stand would be adequate, but after the first use I was sold. The table top is slick and allows stock to glide with ease but is faily small. If you cut plywood, you will want to get the table extentions that mount onto the unit and slide out of site when not in use. Make sure you keep the extentions lubricated with a silicone type lubricant (something that doesn't attract dirt) or they will drive you insane. The saw works very well for heavy and light tasks and a dado blade can be used with the optional dado insert. The fence is easily adjustable and locks positively in place. Should you knock it out of allignment, it can be adjusted to it's original position without too much effort. The main thing I don't like (Ok, Hate) about the saw is the blade guard. It is VERY time consuming to put on and take off due to the weird design. Whoever designed the guard must have done so on a Friday afternoon or a Monday morning. Over all, a very good saw that will get the job done with ease and accuracy and takes up very little space.

I thought that I was getting my husband a very reliable product for his construction projects. After using it only 2 times, the saw keeps shutting down on him. They tell us the brushes need cleaning. Well, try cutting a few sheets of wood and then having to take the tablesaw apart to clean it so that it will start up again. Don't get too comfortable in your project......it all starts over again after a few sheets of wood are passed through. I am really sorry I bought this product. I still think that I got a refurbished one that someone else sent back!

Reading previous reviewers' remarks I think it is important to clarify the intent of this saw. It is meant to be a portable job site tool, not a shop saw for wood working in your home shop!pFor a portable table saw, this is incomparable. I have not tried the new Bosch, however, I tried and bought both a Delta and a Ryobi, both of which were meant to be portable job site tools. The Delta could not hold its fence straight if you screwed it down the table top! The only thing I could do with this saw is install hardwood floors, as the cut lines were + or - 1/4" down the length of the board. The Ryobi on the other hand would cut a straight line, but vibrated so badly that periodically parts would just shake themselves loose.pThe first model of the DeWalt which I owned had its fair share of problems, however, the current model which I have replaced it with is virtually perfect. The capacity is not massive and the top is not that big, however this is not what I expect in a portable table saw. The extension kit for side support and runoff is an OK solution for capacity, but if I need that kind of capacity, I know I can get it on the Jet I keep at home. As far as being tight and cutting straight, this saw is wonderful. Add a glue line rip blade from Freud and I have been able to edge joint SHORT boards without issue. Although this was not what the saw was intended for, it is arguably the most demanding application for any table saw, and it capably executed an edge joint with 3' stock.pPower wise, it pulls a FULL 15 amps, and I have no trouble with 8/4 walnut etc. It will bog down with such an extreme cut, but it came through on the other side without issue. pIf you want a powerful, accurate, PORTABLE table saw, this is the best! If you want a tighter non-portable home shop saw, buy the 10" Jet for the same money.

I'm very happy with this saw...

I started shopping around for a new portable table saw when my Porter Cable saw dissapeared from a job site. The DW744 is very similar, with the 24+ inch rip capacity and powerful motor, but it has a few more features I find very useful. For one, the dial on the fence adjustment makes it a lot easier to make precission adjustments. Another thing is the measurement indicator is a lot easier to read. The PC had a magnifying indicator, which I never really cared for because you had to stand at just the right angle to see it properly. The one on the DW477 is flat and simple, just what I want.
br /
br /It's too bad some of the other reviewers had problems with their DeWalt saw. Maybe DW read these reviews and fixed the problems, because I had mine out of the box, set up with my prefered blade (Freud Diablo 60T), and ripping plywood within 30 minutes. That was over 2 months ago and I still havn't had a single problem with this saw. The Porter-Cable was a good saw, but the DeWalt 744 is better.

Pretty good saw for its size. set up went quickly after I sent the first one back. Absolutely could not square the blade with table. I could square up the blade on the replacement saw, but just barely by really forcing the blade against the stops. Appears this model needs another 1/6" play in adjustment. Fence is a good one. If you replace the so/so blade that comes with it you need to shim the blace out on the arbor or it will rub. Even the one that comes with it has 0 clearence.

It's light, easy to use and the rip fence on gear tracks is excellent. No place to wind the cord is kinda crappy, and the blade angle adjustment slides rather than having something like the knob used for the rip fence for adjustments. The frying pan coating on top doesn't last long if you don't wipe it down with some WD-40 once in a while. I've used it as a jobsite saw and to build cabinets, speaker boxes, cut plexiglass, etc. It's not a $1500 cabinet saw but if you screw a sheet of plywood to a couple sawhorses as a outfeed table and take some care in your cuts, it works awesome for something one person can carry.

I bought this saw to do about 2500 sq/ft of hardwood flooring and it performed really well. I've used it on almost every job since and it's performed flawlessly.
br /
br /I have also had the issue with the rack and pinion gears popping out and putting the fence out of alignment, just as mentioned in other reviews. This happens to mine every time it goes for a ride in the back of the truck. However, this is really not a big deal to correct and takes less than 15 seconds with no tools required. The gears are spring loaded and the rack has enough movement to jump out of alignment during shipping or when you move the saw in a vehicle. I just manually realign the fence by eye and then make sure the teeth on both rack gears are engaged with their respective fence teeth and you're ready to go.
br /
br /Portability and the half sheet rip capacity is the reason to own this saw, but when cutting sheet goods a bigger in-feed and out-feed table would really help. Of course just as other reviewers have stated you can easily make some out of scrap. Also, forget the blade guard it's not worth the time to install.
br /
br /Just like many others have said the blade that comes with it is fine for basic carpentry, but not suited for any kind of fine work.
br /
br /Overall a solid value vs. competitive saws, if I had it to do over I would buy the version on Amazon with the out-feed table and extra blade since that really is a better deal.
br /
br /UPDATE: I just bought the Bosch portable table saw stand which comes pre-drilled for the Dewalt (Good thinking Bosch)... AWESOME. Check the reviews on the Bosch stand. I consider this the must have upgrade for portablity and it's so much sturdier than the Dewalt stand. Not to mention it rolls:)

Pros: Dust collection, decent blade included, dead-on accurate out of the box, incredible fence, decent power.pCons: short distance between from of saw and blade, should have used T-Slots to compensate. pBut, you've heard all that. If you want to know whether this saw is a good choice for the cramped space, first saw buyer I can say decisively that it is because that is the situation I am in and I actually own the saw. Buy it. If you upgrade later to a cabinet or contractors saw you will still have a great portable saw for taking to the in-laws. Or, a second saw to keep the dado stack in.

I am a kitchen and bath remodeler. This saw meets all of my requirements; lightweight and as portable as a miter saw, powerful, accurate, and quick/easy setup. I love it but I'm a DeWalt fan and don't often stray from the brand. I really only saw two options in this category, DeWalt and Bosch. I'm sure the Bosch works well too.

When I was shopping for a new portable table saw I had one major requirement. I had to have at least a 24" rip capacity. With the units available to meet that requirement, the DeWalt was the easy choice with the rack & pinion fence. It is easy to operate and accurate. The only negative points would be the blade guard, which is a pain to install and remove, and the fact that the height adjustment does not lock.Overall, I am very happy with this saw and would recommend it to anyone

I am a trim carpenter(40 Years).First bought this saw when it first came out(4or5years ago)loved it and worked well.Tilting the blade became a little worn.Back end started trailing 1 or 2 degrees.Bought a new one and was very disappointed in the new one.The quailty was not the same as the old one.Tighten the blade insert and the back end rides up, so blade hits on 45 degrees. The stand is whats the worst, it wobbles. Legs come in pieces and are bolted together, bottom of legs has no cross bracing like the two models before.First one was really heavy duty, real stable.Contacted dewalt and sales representative recieved no satifaction.

This table saw is nice. The fence is perfect. I have never had the problem that other reviewers mentioned regarding the fence coming off the tracks. The fence has always remained on the tracks. One important thing. You should order the support extensions that are sold seperately for this saw. It is very difficult to cut medium to large pieces of wood without the support extensions. As with any table saw, the guard is a pain if you want to make tight cuts, for example, take 2 inches or less off the top of the wood. Even though I did not want to, I was forced to remove the guard.

Not too shabby for the price. But you do get what you pay for! If you're considering this for general carpentry or some beginning woodworking, go for it. However, it's a bear to get and keep the blade parallel and there is no lock for the blade height. So if you're planning some serious woodworking ... hold-off 'til you can afford a better tool.

A superior portable saw in every way.
br /
br /Have owned two deltas, two makitas, and the latest bosch -- all pale in comparison to this dewalt. In all fairness, the other saws have their strengths: deltas are inexpensive; makitas are durable and light; the bosch has that great soft-start feature. You always need to consider what you'll be asking the saw to do, right? Me, I'm very demanding! I do a lot of renovation work, which in my neck of the woods means working a lot with hardwood. I recently ran several hundred feet of 8/4 oak through this saw -- casing and trim for windows/doors in an old mission bungelow. Also completely rebuilt 20+ running feet of built-ins -- oak again. Last but certainly not least, added a 300+ foot deck made entirely of 5/4 8/4 ipe! Bottom line: the saw never bogged, never burned, never ran out of alignment. Impressed the heck out of me!!
br /
br /O'kay -- the downside. The saw is pretty damn big; takes up a huge chunk of the bed of the truck. Out of the box the fence was too far out of alignment to fix using the adjustment screws -- had to actually jump a tooth on the rack. That said, thing's still dead on after months of abuse. Oh, and although I do like the folding stand that came with the saw (bonus or standard -- can't remember), watch out for its huge footprint!! I went to set up near the edge of a porch (replacing the railing) and didn't notice I had left one foot dangling in mid-air... until I went to set the saw on the stand and dumped the whole thing over the side. The good news is that, other than a scrape on one end of the cabinet and a fence rail-end plugged with dirt, the saw was completely unhurt. Dropped over three feet and the fence wasn't even out of whack! All in all, not enough of a downside to warrant knocking off even half a star.
br /
br /Amazon had a good price on the saw, plus I managed to hit one of those "save 25$ on all dewalt purchase" days. And they shipped it right to my work site in the boonies of Maine for free!! Last note: buy the side and rear extensions if you can. While not critical, especially if you're not working alone or have a good roller stand or something, I really love the way they fit right into the saw -- can't leave them in the shop by accident.

Among all the portable table saws I've used, this is the best. Although the DeWalt has some quirks such as the fence getting out of alignment, these are easily over come. Even though this saw uses the traditional sidewinder motor, it's performed flawlessly, never bogging down even under the thickest stock, fresh or old. If you routinely throw this in the back of your truck and take it to a job, you'll probably need to check to see that the blade is square and the fence is true, but very little else. Never had a problem with the switch (as other reviewers indicated). Recommended above all other portable table saws.

Just buy it!

The fence is everything on this saw, incomparable to any other portable! You can true the fence, riding on its rack-and-pinion system, simply by loosening a bolt in back and moving the fence flush with the blade. The mitre gauge is flimsy, as others have noted, but only important if you are going to be using a table saw for a lot of mitering. The safety guard is terrible, too, but of course that is the first thing you take off when you get the tool! Unfortunately the blade does not cut as cleanly through a human thumb as it does DF...
br /
br /This saw would be perfect with Bosch's soft-start motor! I cut 8/4 white oak boards (long) with the DeWalt blade with no problems with the motor being over-loaded.

This is an excellent tool. It is well made, stable, accurate and lightweight. The motor is powerful enough for most tasks. The fence is excellent and the miter gauge is ok. (I replaced the miter gauge with a $60 miter gauge from Incra.) I have a small workshop, made from a one-car garage, and a table saw that can be easily moved out of the way is the only one I could accommodate.
br /
br /If you buy this tool you really should buy the table extensions (DW7441). They make it easier to handle large boards and slide up against the table when not being used.
br /
br /This saw is not without its limitations. The table is made of aluminum rather than cast iron, which is what makes it so light. That means you can scratch it as I did when I turned it upside down on my workbench to fasten the extensions. I should mention that this was the only time I had a problem. None of the normal sawing operations caused any damage. The tilting mechanism does not use trunnions -- which I'm told makes bevels less accurately than a cabinet saw. But then again, this saw is several hundred pounds and a thousand dollars less!
br /
br /I think this is just the tool for a first table saw, especially in a shop where space is limited.

I have used the Dewalt for about 3 years now. The 744 has a good motor but that is the best part. In the last three years I have had to adjust the fence about 10 times. The body is made of plastic and has some cracks. I keep the saw on the table stand and wouldn't think of transporting from job to job. I have had to cover the fence with new material. The miter is hard to set and the mechinisms have to be cleaned and lubricated constantly.

My Brother-in-law is always trying to borrow this saw. He,s a pro-remodeler in northern Kentucky. I do work for him when I can,I'm a trim carpenter with 25 yrs. hanging on om nailbelt. I bought my saw used from Amazon about 1.5 yrs. ago. ... best bargain I ever got[for a tool]. This is an awsome portable saw, if you have been using portable or bench saws fore onsite rip work, you owe it to yourself to check one of these out. It can handle a 4x8 sheet of plywood[with help or aux support]. Once you see the rack and pinion fence you might even dump your old contractor saw!

For a knock-around it's a champ.

I've been dragging little table saws around with me for about as long as an old teenager is old. They've all been somewhat less than I'd have them be. This little rascal, with a little care is almost capable of doing what I can do with my Craftsman shop model. It has some personality that requires a bit of getting used to but dollar for dollar it is one of the best saws I've ever used portable, in-the-field. The price is only a pinch when you get out and feel it's punch.

On site carpenter's table saw: easy to move, very accurate fence and easily adjustable. The fence is probably it's nicest feature, Accurate and easily adjusted...just occasionally blow off the wood dust that will clog the gears after a while.
br /
br /I am a Bosch tool guy usually but I found the Bosch equivalent to be even larger, with a flimsier fence but without a larger capacity of table top nor with as much cutting power. I also prefer Dewalt's chop saws too.
br /
br /Any downsides? The motor is somewhat uneven sounding making me wonder as to it's longevity. I've owned the old tiny Makita 7 or 8 inch table saw and that was a wonder of longevity even if the motor always whined. I miss it's portability but it was burnt up in a friend's garage fire...and the insurance paid for my new Dewalt. I don't miss the Makita at all. Only it's portability..but with a little planning, the Dewalt will fit easily fit in the back of my Volvo SW and the stand is sturdy and easily set up. If owning this saw plan on cleaning the inside of the saw blade well below the arbor as the sliding mechanism for raising the blade gets clogged easily and will affect the ease of raising of the blade. Also the miter gauge is annoying with that dragging clip thing as mentioned elsewhere but no biggy...it's meant to align the gauge in 90 or 45 degrees..if using it a lot..just tape it in the up position...
br /
br /I ripped a large quantity of Ipe, an extremely hard wood from Brazil, for custom handrails and deckboards and I went through 4 blades needing sharpening.. and the Dewalt's still humming as if new. And don't 'dis' Dewalt's cheaper blades... I found them to be better than the Fraud ones....Freud I mean and other more expensive blades.

We use this saw for residential carpentry. The fence is the easiest to align and keep straight for consistent cuts. We own several dewalt table saws and they have been consistent performers with little to no issues. We used to use grizzly saws but they were too bulky and not residential electric friendly. I can recommend this saw for plywood, composite boards and cementitious siding (with appropriate blades of course). I would give this 4.75 stars if I could, I'm very picky about giving a perfect rating.

I picked the DeWalt over the Bosch only because of the price deal. When I received the saw, set it up and turned it on I noticed that the blade wobbled quite a bit. When I set my gauge on the end of the blade and turned it with my hand it was badly warped. I put the same blade on my cabinet saw and it was perfectly true. I tried putting blade stiffeners on it and it made no difference. Also when I first unscrewed the nut on the arbor I had to use the wrench to get it off when it got to the end of the threads. Once I got it off I noticed that they were bent slightly as if the motor was dropped on the arbor before it was installed at the factory. I called their tech department and they said I should return it and get another one. So I did. I decided after that to get the Bosch. After seeing both up close now I feel like I made the right decision.
br / I'm sure that the problem I had with the DeWalt was rare, but aside from that, weighing the two machines side by side I feel the Bosch is the better choice. To me, paying a little extra is worth the difference in overall quality.

I bought this for it's portability since I maintain several older rental houses. The rack and pinion fence is so great, easy, and so precise that I sold my craftsman stationary table saw to clear up garage space. If you use a dado blade...get the plastic dado insert from Woodcrafters...not the Dewalt Dado insert. They should increast the price a little and include the outfeed and side supports...you'll want those. If you have an account at Graingers...they sell the saw and outfeed support pretty cheap. You'll love this saw. I agree with the guy that didn't like the blade guard...but all blade guards are somewhat of a hassle.

I had this for a little while. Sold it to my brother who then proceeded

This is one of, if not, the best portable tablesaw you can buy. It's fairly light, powerful, accurate, and the included base just makes it that much better. I have had mine for about 9 months and the only problem I've had was replacing the blade. The fence is so accurate that you don't need to double check it with a tape measure. If the tape on the fence say's 19 15/16", that's exactly what you'll get. The saw will cut sheets of plywood in half without a problem. If you want a good tablesaw for home or work, or if you don't have room for a larger saw, this is the saw to get.

The directions are complete and easy to understand. However despite the directions, which include turning this saw upside down and adjusting the rack and pinion adjustment, this table saw just does not measure up. The gears on the rack and pinion fence adjustment continually skip especially as the fence extends out to the its maximum rip length of 24 inches. The mechanics of this feature were just plain shoddy. DeWalt Customer support was equally unimpressive. Like the title says, I recommend running in the other direction on this one.
