DeWalt is out-sourcing a little too much to China

I bought one of these, new with DeWalt blade, on eBay for $60 delivered. I already have four 18v batteries, so I needed none of those. I was a bit shocked to see that it comes with a plastic blade guard. Since that's what the saw rests on when you put it down, it is not likely to last long. The safety switch is awkward to use. The general heft and feel of the thing is not up to the quality of my three DeWalt drills. It works well enough for a light duty saw and it is worth about what I paid for it, so I'm satisfied with the purchase, but just a little disppointed with the fall-off in DeWalt quality.

AWESOME Saw!

What a gem! Light weight, maneuverable, easy to use a REAL BARGAIN! Can't figure out what all the problems other people are having with the safety button? I find it a breeze to use. I guess one should read the whole description on the item before buying it you'll see in plain English TOOL ONLY! This unit is plenty tough enough to do jobsite duty. Just keep a spare battery charged up you won't have any problems.

This is one almighty little saw !!!

The saw arrived within a week, in perfect condition and I have been framing in a bathroom with it all day. It is a great tool and it almost keeps up with my mag77 only I don't need to roll out any cord's.
br /PLEASE NOTE: this saw has recieved some undue bad ratings because it is a BARE TOOL (a perfect replacement or addition to your existing 18v DeWalt tool collection) It does not come with a battery or charger ... well duh! A single battery retails for over $80 alone, what do you expect? It does however come with a blade (nice little suprise to me).
br /This is a great buy and I'm sure you will be very pleased with it's capabilities if you purchase one.

Good saw- if you need the battery charger - buy the kit

This saw got poor reviews due it being the saw only- which is great for those of us who have other dewalt tools and all ready have batteries. Otherwise it is a fine saw for use when pulling out a corded saw is too much work or your not near electricity. It's not a replacement for a corded tool- but it has worked very well for me when cutting conduit, some 2X4's and working on the fenceline without electricity.

I recently upgraded to a Dewalt 18V drill, so I bought this bare saw to go with it. I just spent a good part of the weekend building a deck and stairs for my spa. This saw rocks. Very light, very easy to handle both right and left handed. The trigger safety is an easy reach. I can't say enough good things about this saw.

Great Saw but...

I love the saw but it didn't include a blade. The Amazon description says "6-1/2" Carbide Tipped Blade for 2x Cutting Capacity at 90 and 45 Degrees". Also - It looks new, as advertised, but wasn't in a factory box; just a plastic bag in a off-the-shelf box. I'd still recommend it, just be sure to buy a blade.

Tolerable, but only if you already have a bunch of XRP tools

I work as a contractor, and have many different DeWalt XRP cordless tools. All of the others are excellent, but I ahve found this saw to be terribly balanced, with an awkward safety switch. Also, While it is OK for light framing use, the blade speed isn't hihg enough for any application that demands a clean cut. Overall, the tool is fairly handy, and I'm glad I glad i have it, since its a lot lighter than my Skilsaw, but this saw needs a serious redesign.

Great saw!

I purchased this saw as a companion tool to my other 18 volt DeWalt tools. I already own
br /several battery packs and chargers so the "bare saw" option seemed great - a cordless saw (DeWalt no less) for around $50, how can one beat that? I used it all day on the first day and found it very easy to use with plenty of power and the blade speed was more than adequate for framing material cutting. I had absolutely no problem getting used to the safety device on the trigger (contrary to another reviewer's experience). The saw I purchased was the one from MaxTool and was pleased that it was a little more than a "bare tool". It included the blade wrench, carbide blade, and edge guide with the saw - in other words - you get everything in the picture plus an edge guide! I cannot speak for the other dealers, but this MaxTool really exceeded my expectations.

My husband was thrilled to finally have a DeWalt 18V XRP Cordless Circular Saw. He likes to cut wood outside, and this allows him to do so quickly and without an extension cord. I was very pleased with the price. The saw was shipped to us very quickly. He was quite happy on Christmas!

This is a well-made quality tool. I don't consider it heavy-duty enough for rigorous jobsite use on a daily basis, but for the occasional time when you don't want to drag out the heavier corded saw, it's great.
br /
br /But the ergonomics - yech! The placement and balance of the handle is just wrong. Surprisingly, Ryobi got it better than DeWalt. And the safety switch that you have to depress to work the trigger is very awkward - I often have to depress it, then pull the trigger, then shift my hand to a more comfortable position while keeping the trigger depressed.
br /
br /I bought it because I have a lot of Dewalt cordless tools, so I didn't need to purchase the batteries or charger, just the saw alone. I'm glad I bought it, I really like having it for occasional use. But they gotta re-engineer the ergonomics of the handle!

Replaced a 14.4v Dewalt saw with this one. It's run time is much longer. We reach for it now when we used to grab a corded saw.

2 and a half weeks still not repaired yet.

I got this saw as part of a six tool combo. It was defective within a couple weeks of very light use. I had to slap the side of the motor with the trigger pressed for it to start up. When it did start, it sounded like a blender with rocks for bearings. I called Dewalt to get it repaired, took it to the factory owned service center in Columbus Ohio. The guy said he would call me in 2 days. I have called three times and its been 2 and half weeks so far. They were still waiting on the parts. They could have sent a new tool from Mexico to Columbus in that time already. I asked if they could just swap out my tool for a reconditioned one (also from Mexico), He said they don't have any in stock. Well they don't have the parts to fix mine in stock either.
br /
br /I am very disappointed with this saw. Yes the trigger safety is very poorly designed, and the seam where the plastic housing meets under your finger will dig into your hand too. AND it sounds horrible, not smooth at all.
br /
br /I have the 15ga. nailer, which is great and rest of the combo is okay, except the Impact driver's bit holder sucks, but now that the blue and red companies are expanding the lithium line ups, I will seriously consider making the switch to a new system.
br /
br /Milwaukee's new M18 system looks good, but if Bosch redoes the cordless miter saw and hand planer with a lion battery, well we'll see.

3 years and counting....

I thought i was just picking up a trim saw when i bought this 3 years ago.
br /Apparently i was wrong. I am a handyman/carpenter by trade and have used this thing to rip 1x and plywood, crosscut 2x anything...and it takes it. I keep 3 different blades and always try to use the appropriate one for the material i am cutting and of course, a fully charged battery.
br /The last framing job i did, i used this thing to cut over 250 2x4's for the walls. The corded Makita sat unused for two days.
br /For all the criticism of this saw, it does the job for me...for 3 years now of daily and sometimes abusive use.
br /But, as always, the Dewalt batteries suck so i keep 3-4 charged all day.

If you already have the batteries you can save a lot of money with the bare tool. The saw's not perfect - none are - but it's done everything I've needed it to do and it saves room and weight in the truck. I use it everyday and haven't had any problems.

I'm just a homeowner, not a builder, so I wondered whether I needed such a well made, professional-level saw. But the price is not much above the flimsy stuff so I went ahead. I was especially attracted to the solid base - magnesium, I think - and the blade on the left of the motor.
br /
br /The first few cuts literally made me smile. Quiet, precise, not unwieldy, easy to align, and the blade stops very quickly. It took one squeeze of the safety to adjust to a somewhat deeper start switch, then it felt very secure and comfortable. It arrived in a shipping box just wrapped with the manual and blade - no inner box and packing junk that I just would've thrown out anyway. Very impressive. This is a great saw at a very reasonable price. By the way, for you homeowners, the DeWalt battery charger is programmed to keep batteries well conditioned when not in constant use. Unbelievable bargain.
br /
br /Update: I've now used the saw over a weekend for many long cuts (ripping 2"x8' cedar). I was disappointed at first how quickly the battery died (2 rips!?), but after recharging twice it now works for a very satisfactory time (4 rips, still fine). Maybe the battery needed 'conditioning' the charger doesn't provide? It's nice to see that DeWalt sells Lithium ion batteries, which do not have the memory problems associated with NiCad.

It's a great little saw, but the blade is so small in diameter that you can hardly cut through anything with it.

Great Saw...not so good trigger and safety switch placement

Pros: I like this saw more than I thought; it has very good power, very smooth operation and goes a long way on one battery. The deck is quality aluminum and very easy to adjust. It is nicely balanced even though the battery is probably half of the weight.
br /
br /Cons: The trigger and safety switch are too close together for large hands. Also with the trigger pulled there is a gap in the handle that digs into my finger; especially during long cuts or prolonged use...this is probably exaggerated because of the angle my finger is at on the trigger when flexing to release the safety switch with my thumb. It was annoying enough that I started wearing a glove when operating this saw for more than short cuts.
br /
br /Overview: The quality of this saw makes up for the trigger issue I have with it. And as with all my Dewalt reviews, my 11 Dewalt tools (and growing) on one battery platform makes Dewalt 5 stars over all. I marked this saw down but that shouldn't discourage anyone from purchasing it.

I have experience with cordless circular saws. The ryobi 18 volt. I knew when I pressed the trigger that is was not going to make it through that 8' 3/4 plywood. I bought it two years ago and never had the opportunity to use it. The other tools that came in the combo worked great, but not the circular saw. Do not buy a combo pack with a circular saw, unless you already have a corded saw.

The product works good, but... It says nothing about not having any type of power source. You have to buy a battery pack and a charger seperate. So as my Father took his Fathers Day gift out to use it, he wasn't able to until he bought a battery pack.
