I needed a jig saw to cut out some outlets for putting up bead board. I settled on this one because I didn't need it for everyday or professional use and I was wasn't going to spend $100+ for a DeWALT, PC, Ridgid, Bosch, etc. only to use it 3 times a year. This jig saw bridges the gap between the cheap ones that couldn't cut through butter, and the pricy ones. The Skil is actually priced right in the middle but I read the reviews and stayed away from it!! I was worried about this saw after I bought it because of the low price but have been pleasantly surprised. Free hand is a little sloppy, as you cannot turn off the orbital action like on most top models. Other than that it is a great value

Great Saw, 1 minor defect

I bought this saw after christmas with a gift card I recieved. It works wonderful, quiet motor, great orbital action, the variable speed is great too. The only problem with it is is that the dust extraction device(the attachment so u can suck dust out with a vaccum cleaner)fell off in the second time I used it, but I could really care less, just get a shopvac or broom. All in all its a great saw!

I am sure this isn't the best jig saw out there (of course), but it more than meets my needs as a novice do-it-yourselfer. I got the most use out of this when cutting laminate flooring to fit around corners and obstacles. It did an excellent job and I think, for the price, I got exactly what I wanted. Yes, you get what you pay for, but you can take that saying too far. If I were a serious user, than I would agree, but for occassional use, buying a high quality tool would be a waste of money.

Great value...great price !

I'm very satisfied with my purchase. The Js600k ia a quality saw with a low price. Thanks to amazon.com's free standard shipping, the saw is the same price I paid for my (skil) jigsaw I purchased a few years back at a "big box store". Comparing the 2 saws is like comparing a cadillac with a bicycle. Thank you...DW.

Don't make my mistake.

I bought this saw as a compromise between the Makita level saws and the ten dollar junk. I should have spent the extra money and bought a Dewalt, Makita or Hitachi. The power level is ok, but cutting a straight line is a roll of the dice. Even when I use a speed square as a straight edge I get cuts that are not 90 degrees. The other problem is that the base plate will not stay perpendicular to the blade and the wheel to tighten it is in a terrible location and hard to use.

br /This is without a doubt the worst powertool I have ever bought and I will be replacing it in the next month.

Decent first jig saw

This jig saw is large and tough. It has withstood a lot of use and abuse. The heavy plastic case has been tough enough to withstand a few short drops to the floor. It isn't the easiest to control, but it is a good hobby saw. The power cord is a little short. Overall I would say it is a good value, but it is an "entry" level power tool for the occasional user.

decent for occasional use

I bought the jig saw to replace an older BD jig saw I had before. While it is way better than my old one, it is still a mediocre tool. My worst complaint is the footplate locking knob. It is extremely hard to tighten, and no matter how much I tightened, the base plate can still easily moved, making it very hard to make perfect straight up and down cuts. The vacuum attatchement is also worthless and so is the dust blower. If you need a jig saw that will only get used a few times a year, this is a good buy. If you want something that will cut easliy, stay in alignment, stand up to heavy duty use, and produce great quality cuts do what I did and buy a Bosch.

I just purchased this saw and it is great! It has power yet it is quiet, easy to view line-of-cut, convenient features (I've had no problem with the dust extractor device, it's made to clip on and off), and I've had no problem following a line, unlike the first review guy who NEVER used an orbital saw before (there is Variable Speed Control for guys with lesser arm strength!). Just as good as the way more expensive brands!
