Unlike most of the other reviewers of miter saws (and other such items), I'm an entry-level amateur and weekend woodworker. I researched compound miter saws to death and had no clue what to look for when I started. I narrowed my search down to this Hitachi and a 10" DeWalt. The Hitachi won based on price (cheaper), which included not only a decent blade, but also extension bars and a stop (despite what another reviewer states) which together would add about more to the price of the DeWalt. My saw was perfect right out of the box; no adjustments were needed. Easy to use and no regrets in making a budget-minded decision over the DeWalt. The only serious drawback is that you read the miter scale off to the side of the handle, while on most other miter saws you read the scale directly under or over the handle. After a month of use, this still takes some getting used to. Still, most low-priced saws (ie, Delta, Ryobi) have a handle that's bolted on and not directly part of the table, which is a poorer comprimise. All in all, a great value for the bucks.

good performance, better price

I considered a 12 inch miter saw, but decided I did not need the extra cutting capacity (and cost). This saw has been a solid performer and the price is quite fair. It has plenty of power and has not given me any trouble. It is also light and easy to transport. The only things I would change include increasing the fence height and include extension wings.

second mitre saw does well.

i purchased this hitachi saw only as the second mitre box in my arsenal. i am a bar builder; with 18yrs. experience. my main saw is the makita LS1013. the makita is a great saw; however it is also costly! i was reluctant in hauling it to all job sites because of its replacement cost. that is precisely the reason for the hitachi. i have to be honest... i now find myself grabbing for the hitachi saw for just about everything. i often just use the makita for only the most absolute detail.the hitachi is light, nimble and well constructed. the table provides mitres of up to 60 degrees. the only wish would be for more positive detents on the table; otherwise an excellent acquisition!

I own a Hitachi Compound Miter Saw C10FCB. It has not lived up to my expectations nor to the advertised specifications. It will not cut a 4x4, because the plastic blade guard hits the wood before the blade reaches it. This is actually the second one of these saws I've owned. The brake on the first one went out on about the fourth or fifth cut. After much wrangling, the store where I bought it agreed to replace it with a brand new saw. Now the brake on the second one is beginning to go bad -- the blade spins freely when I let go of the trigger on about every third cut. Hitachi is apparently aware of the design flaw involving the blade guard and the inability to cut 4x4s. The C10FCB is being redesigned, and the new model is supposed to be available mid-January 2003. But will all the existing saws be recalled, including those still on sale in stores like Lowe's? Will Hitachi reimburse consumers? Will they offer new saws to everyone who owns a C10FCB? I sure hope Hitachi decides to do the right thing. In the meantime, I cannot recommend this saw.

I drove a 2 hour round trip to get this saw and now will drive another 2 hour round trip to return it! The saw is advertised as being able to cut 4x4s (nominal) at 0 degrees. It WON'T because of a poorly designed blade guard that hits the wood before the blade ever gets near it. It is also advertised as including the extensions and stop as standard equipment (even on Hitachis own "sell sheet") but it doesn't. The extensions and stop are optional. Apparently Hitachi knows about these problems, but doesn't care and won't fix them. Their reaction was "Sorry." I could almost hear the guy shrug and roll his eyes over the phone. Fortunately I saw another reviewer's comment on the blade guard thing after I bought the saw (but before I unpacked it) and was able to check it out myself before completely setting up the saw. It went right back in the box. Speaking of the box, if you insist on buying one of these saws, you had better check it out before you leave the store as the packaging does little to protect it from damage in shipping.

You have here a top rated saw by Consumer Reports . That's why I bought it. After using it over a year, I agree with them. As a contractor- I throw it in the truck and haul it all about. This saw has light weight but strength. The stop positions are very positive, much better than the Makita or the Delta saws I own. I use this saw to cut framing and do fine moulding. You will love this saw!

It's a good stable saw, with a perfect hinge point with bearings left and right. The manufacturer promisses that it comes with extension wings, but that is NOT so. And the advertised 60 degree miter is only true for the right side, the left side is 45 degrees.
