I used to pull nails out of boards with a claw hammer, now I just cut right through them. This is a fantastic time saving tool for anyone working with existing contruction. If you plan to finish your basement, move a wall, add a window, install a door or repair a deck, buy one of these. You simply won't find another tool for the money that will provide so much time savings and value.pNo need to pay a lot, this model has the all the key features you'll need; 10 Amp motor, Variable Speed, Quick Change Blade Chuck and Carrying Case. pThink you may need the oscillating blade model? Keep in mind that these saws are not designed to make extremely straight or precision cuts -they are designed to cut quickly with only fair accuracy. The oscillating blade will cut wood somewhat faster than this model. Instead of paying more, if you will be cross-cutting a lot of boards, buy a 10-12" miter saw. Need to rip plywood or OSB?, use a circular saw with a straight edge. If you need to do demolition, cut rough curves, blind cuts, tight space cuts, short rips, cut metal, cut PVC pipe or anything else except concrete -buy this.
Almost perfect - but missing on a couple small details

First of all, this is a terrific saw. Good variable speed control, fast tool-free blade changes, solid construction, tremendous power, and reasonably smooth operation. I consider these features to be absolute requirements for anyone looking to buy a $100-$150 reciprocating saw. In these categories, I think this Porter-Cable is one of the best saws on the market. Where they missed is in the small details. The thin metal and wood blades that come with the tool are pathetic. After bending all the blades that were included, I went out and bought two Blu-Mol Aggressor Xtreme 6" Bi-metal with cobalt blades...a wrecking blade for wood, the other a "rescue/demolition" blade for metal. What a difference! This is the ultimate blade/saw combination. I'm also not a fan of the way the cord is stored in the case. Getting the case shut without pinching the power cord is a problem every time I put it away. Would have been nice if they would have made room to wrap the cord around the tool itself. But these minor annoyances are exactly that...minor. The quick change mechanism is a breeze and it's a great tool overall.
So far, so good

As a renovation contractor, I've had ring gear failure on two Black and Decker Industrial recips.- (now known as DeWalt DW 303k) in spite of regular maintenance, so I gave the PC 9735 a shot about 3 months ago. From my research, the combination of power, price and stroke can't be matched. Plus, once the one year warranty is over, I can open her up and install 20' of inexpensive SJ cord, unlike most of the Milwaukees, and reach for the stars! You will learn very quickly to hold this baby between your legs as you manipulate the quick lok blade clamp with two hands, but reject any recip w/o this feature. (I have had to use Vise Grips on a PC 9737P) The case is crowded- I did a field mod on my old BD one. No, you don't need orbital action- we're not doing cabinet work here. Check out the reviews in JLC Oct. 2000. Don't consider vibration- If you're not used to standing on a ladder, shakin' quakin' with cut offs cascading down on you, learn computer programming or get a job with the USPS!
Not a tool for exact work, but it'll cut through anything

I finally had an excuse to buy a recip. saw when installing a new window recently--for the same price as other brand's 6 or 7 amp saws, I purchased the Porter Cable with it's 10 amp motor. I haven't used many reciprocating saws, but this one beats the few I have used hands down. As with any sawsall, this isn't an exact tool, so don't go using it for mitering trim, but it'll cut through just about anything (including nails, I found out :) in no time at all. And the quickchange blade is just the icing on the cake.

This is the tool for many tough jobs. I bought the tool to cut hole in 45 degree roof for attic fan. No starter hole necessary - just plunged cut right through shingles and plywood. Unbelievable smoothness and power. Next I used it to remove roof trusses to build "bonus" room over garage. This tool zipped through wood and metal straps, 10/12d nails like a hot knife through butter. You need to experience the smoothness and power to believe it. And it also has quick release blades which are extremely handy when working fast, because you don't have to have any tools at all to change blades - just your hands. Extra blades are at Home Depot. I wish that I bought one of these years ago - I never knew cutting through many different materials at all angles could be so safe and easy.

I am not a contractor but I have been using this saw for cutting dry rots in difficult to reach places. Also I use it for cutting tree branches too. It is powerful and the quick release work great!. The vibration is not too bad. I wish the carrying case were a little bigger. But I love this tool. I think this is the least expensive pro quality 10AMP saw in the market.
Good saw, good price.

Bought it because it was [reasonable], was a PC (I like their stuff) and because I needed it to do some work in my home addition. Have used it a bit now and I'm very pleased with it. It vibrates a bit but I only notice it if I don't have the saw pressed firmly against material being cut. It cuts well. Zip and you're through whatever. The case is fine but the cord is a tight fit and the blade storage area won't hold a long blade. Big deal. The saw works just fine as didn't cost me an arm and a leg. I'd do it again.
Tim Allen would love this saw.

This is a "real man's" tool. :) The 10 amp motor is strong enough to cut through anything. I bought it because I was replacing a bunch of doors in my house. It cuts through pretty much everything in its path with only a slight hesitation. So far I've used it for cutting out doors, cutting aluminum (with a metal cutting rescue blade), old tree branches (with a 12 inch blade it makes a good substitute chain saw) and for taking out old shrubs. For the last one I just shoved the 12 blade in the dirt and four inch roots out from under a 10 lilac bush then yanked it out. It took about 5 minutes and I figure it saved me about an hours worth of work for each shrub. pThe price vs. performance can't be beat either. There were a lot of other 5 - 6 amp saws that cost more. The Sawzall's were 11 amps but closer to $200 and nothing else was close. The quick change blade makes it a snap to put the blades in and you get a nice carrying case to boot. The grip is nice and it is easy to hold on to. pAll in all this is a great saw.
Great saw, especially for the money

I think that you really cannot beat this saw for the money. It has 10 amps of power. All the other comparably priced reciprocating saws are 6-8 amps. That's a big difference. To get comparable power, you're going to have to spend 150-170 on another brand. Is it just me or does PC always have the most power at a lower price?brAnyway, the saw does what it needs to do. With the appropriate blade, it will cut through just about anything. I got it because I was renovating an old barn and it is about the only tool that can cut off a 4x4 or 6x6 that is still nailed into the wall. Also cuts through nails w/o a problem. That's a big time saver if you're renovating.brOnly negatives are that it is very loud and vibrated pretty bad. Also seems a bit heavy. But who cares? Reciprocating saws are pretty specialized tools. When you need one, it is the only thing that will do, but you just don't use them that often. So get this one. It does everything you want it too at a cheap price. Use the cash you save to buy a nicer drill or miter saw.
The perfect saw

This saw has been a solid performer for me for a couple of years. It has plenty of power, is well-built, not too heavy, and the quick-change system is great. All this for a very low price. I cannot think of a thing I would change about this saw. It is one of my favorite tools.

Wow does this saw work. I've only used it once, but it just tore into the job. It was a very solidly built workbench (2x6's and 4x4's) and the saw just went right through anything it hit. Nails, conduit, wiring, etc. The Quick-change collet worked well. I'm just a DIYer, but I can heartily recommend this saw to anyone with some demolition to do.pFrank
easy to use and FUN!

Before i borrowed a "Reciprocating Saw" (Sawzall is technically a registered trademark) from a relative, i had no idea how easy it made demoliton. I was able to go in and surgically remove any offending pipes, nailers, floorboards, basically anything I didn't like. The only thing it seemed like it couldn't do was to cut through a cast iron bathtub, but the twenty pound sledge made quick work of that project. I was greatly dissapointed when I had to return the borrowed tool, but quickly quelled my dissapointment by purchasing my own. (by the way, the saw which i borrowed was a DeWalt 18 volt XRP cordless, great tool, if you have a higher budget) brWhen i went to my local home store, i was torn over what model to purchase. This model looked like an acceptable upgrade to the lower-end corded DeWalt model. It was only ten bucks more, but had three more amps and a bigger stroke length. Porter-Cable makes another great tool. (and as a final plus, the're made right here in the good ol' us of a.)
Great for rennovation, demo and hobbies(?!!)

Awesome tool! Read about different recip saws before buying and got this at substantial discount. Have been working on a church building and renovating project for several months now and the only reason the other guys have used another saw (cordless) is because of extension cord availability. This has got the power and durability to make any job easier...walls, 100 year old (real!) 2x4s that are iron-hard, floors, oversized beams. Demo is fast and easy with the orbital cuts...fine work is pretty controlled with the straight cuts. pBest flexible recip we've had so far. Professional (or almost) at hobbyist price - you can't go wrong with this saw. pMy wife has been using it for rough cutting a carousel animal she's been working on with very long blades and it worked great for the initial "rounding" of the animal (now...is it a tiger or a bear? - only time will tell).pI'd buy it again or another if I burn this one out!
